Election 2004 - the sad truth

Fuck, another three years of every single person you come into contact with saying "I didn't vote for him".

It's just coz they have such a big advantage in the regional areas because of the National party. Even despite that though, I'm quite surprised... I really thought the tables would turn this time. Oh well.

Shannow, only 53% or so counted thought, ain't it? (According to ABC's website)

Please correct me if I'm wrong or out-of-date :)

I just saw that Howard's won :(

What the fuck is wrong with Australia?!

(Saying that, Blair will probably be returned next year here).

At least it's looking good for Kerry in the US.

As I said, if it wasn't for the National Party cleaning up in rural Australia as usual it would have been much closer. Also I think it is a stupid way of polling, going by who wins the most seats instead of who gets the most votes overall.

I dunno what the actual overall voting totals are but I would assume they are ALOT closer than the Coalition cleaning up in seats, because the cities are where the population is concentrated, but the rural seats are where the Coalition cleaned up.

Liberal 40.6% 75
National 6.0% 12
Labor 37.9% 60

There we go, my point proven. Only 6% of the vote to National but it made up an extra 12 seats! The national party should be a separate party and not part of a Coalition with Liberal to make it more fair.

Fair's got nothing to do with it, Trix. :) Libs and Nats share the same ideals and stuff and are happy to work together if it means running things their way. I'm sure if Labor had 74 seats and needed an extra three to get the majority they would have done a deal with the independents or the Greens or whoever had the extra seats they could have borrowed.

I really thought this one would be neck n neck right down to the line, and I was hoping that labour would come out on top.

It's kinda baffling that so many would vote liberal after everything they have done since the last election. I guess the scare campaign worked... and it will take a dip in the economy to cause a change in government at the next election.

Seems like there are a large number of dumb fucks in this country who believe anything the government tells them. The scare campaign did work, unfortunately.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a dip in the economy at some stage in the next few years, regardless of who's in government, as the growth we've had is built on credit, which isn't sustainable in the long term.

Oh well, I did my bit - spent 4 hours handing out How to Vote cards today. Lindsay Tanner kept his seat as far as I'm aware, so at least that effort didn't fail. I didn't watch much of the election coverage once it was clear that the conservatives had been re-elected; it was too depressing.

Anyway, the likelihood of my leaving our shores for another lengthy spell this time next year has increased significantly. Australia's not the tolerant place it once was, and if I can get away from here during this government's occupation I'll do so. Here a lot people seem to based on what's potentially best for their hip-pocket, and it's fucking pathetic. These days I'm plain embarrassed to be Australian.
