I am thinking of lyrics like Gutworm's, they are often loaded with anguish, but with enough word-smithery that it works and doesn't some out sounding like a whinefest.

Any other bands that do this well?

I like Darkseed's lyrics a lot, especially in the later 3 albums.

maudlin of the Well has really good lyrics, of course one has to not be put off by the prose..

Kamelot, Vanishing Point do it quite well.

Nightwish nails it well once in a while.

Sentenced, Riverside kind of alternate between really good stuff and stuff where I can see someone interpreting it as whining.

I'll be captain obvious and say Alice In Chains, with emphasis on the songs Layne wrote for the Dirt record. The lyrics work so well because their authentic. If you know Layne's life, you know he actually went through that personal hell so the words hit 10 times harder.

A lot of Opeth's lyrics are very emotive. Though they are dark and speak to death, lost, cold, outdoors, and lonlyness, they truelly capture your attention, especially with the incredible backing musicality.
