First Ever Possible UM Trade Day

I think we need to put stuff that we really like. At the same time I'm going to leave off stuff like Immolation, Death, Burzum, Blind Guardian & Fates Warning because it seems like a ton of people here already listen to these bands. I would hate to have to submit a metal compilation to certain people here who eat, sleep & breathe metal.

So maybe the pairings should be reviewed. Maybe random, then adjusted.

I think what Alter should do is either:

1) Get some help in doing this
2) Be a bit cognizant of things and go review people's RYM and Last.FM accounts if they exist. If I'm stuck with someone like Dodens, for example, it's going to be entirely non-metal that I give him.

See, I could appreciate hearing some immolation, Burzum, Blind guardian and later Fates Warning, because I don't really listen to that stuff. Don't assume we have all heard it all, just because all of us have collectively heard it all. I have never heard Burzum.

Well, whoever you get, you should go through their collection of music and see what they don't have or what you think they would like. That would be the easiest way to do things.

A pre-approved list beforehand isn't the best idea, I agree, but I think giving each other a general guideline of what you might be interested in hearing and what you DEFINITELY do not want to hear beforehand might be useful. Omni can send me whatever she wants though.

I'm in

and we have done something similar to this before...when everybody was uploading their own mixes for people to download. that was good stuff.

I still have a bunch of those on my harddrive. Those comps started getting posted right around the time I was getting into black metal and they helped a bunch.

I think some of you are thinking into this whole concept too fucking much & in turn taking away half the fun. I don't think anyone here is planning on making a Metallica compilation, so it's all good.

I was planning on just sending someone St. Anger retagged as a bunch of other artists, actually.

Problem is, some of us here listen to stuff that 90% of other here have heard in terms of metal. I think it depends on who you get. If you get someone that you know has probably heard 95% of your metal collection, then opt for non-metal. In the opposite case, where they've only heard about 5% of your collection (or if they're Derek), send them mostly metal

Yeah, a lot of the metal I listen to is relatively mainstream. I'd do much better at exposing people to new stuff if I focused on other genres.

Meet me. Hi.

And tbh I really like the song Pull Me Under, but to me it is not representative. That song is a large part of why I have tried to get into them more than once, without success.

But I would still put a DT song on if you want.

Well yeah Pull Me Under isn't representative, because it's one of their less progressive songs, and certainly not one of their best. Try appreciating them for what they're good at.

Yeah, setting vague genre guidelines might be helpful. Though ultimately we should all be willing to put up with stuff we might not necessarily like in the effort of appreciating someone else's tastes.

Before you send the person the cd, you can list the bands on it just to review and see if they have heard any of them already and go from there.

That ruins the surprise nearly as much as listing specific songs does, so no we shouldn't do that.
