Hey Asgeir,

I absolutely love the "clean" blast beat sound on Epic, especially at the start of Future Reminiscence when it combines with the symphonics. One half of it has got to be the killer snare you use, which I suppose is all-natural, but after seeing the Studio session video on YouTube, I see the kicks are "digital". What sequencer/VST are you using for them, as I really dig that sound? Thanks!

Thanks Asgeir. Ahah, you're a GOGer too, like good 'ol Andy Sneap (his free samples are quite delicious, especially the toms. So you've used the same set up on Vintersorg and Scariot's "Momentum Shift" too? Btw, the latter album is PURE GOLD, I hope Olaisen wants to do another Scariot album in the future!!!

Tell him that! He's wasting his time on Zerozonic these days...

i've always been a fan of asgeirs snare sound, especially on origin. the second snare hit at the end of the second roll on earth imagery is awesome in terms of production.

asgeir, since empiricism it always sounded like you were using a piccolo snare. is that true?

OK Asgeir, this is how you should use Drumagog

Were you in the studio with Ihsahn for AngL, or did you just do it by correspondence? I always wanted to know if the guy had a sense of humour.

Got my own studio so I recorded there on my own. The songs came with programmed drums which is just suggestions - not something I have to copy note by note. I know what kind of drumming Ihsahn likes after working on his first album so this time I only had to redo two riffs on the whole album. My approach was "How would Neil Peart play on an extreme metal album".

That is quite a question. There should be epic tom fills every 4 bars, amirite?

Back on Ihsahn, out of the fathers of Norwegian Black Metal, he is by far my favourite, but still the most mysterious to me as he hasn't yet divulged a funny side to him yet. His misanthropic, anti-collectivist feelings shoot straight at you, and you feel utterly convinced he's not putting on a show. I mean seriously, Nattefrost from Carpathian Forest had the brilliant idea of having a saxophonist in a black metal album, Attila from Mayhem dresses up in a rabbit costume for a concert, as for that goofball Fenriz:

So...is there a lighter side to Ihsahn I'm not aware of?

Well, Nattefrost is also dressing up as a woman on stage but don't be so sure it's only for fun...

I've talked a lot with Ihsahn and most of it was not about music. He's actually one of the most normal guys I know (which, ehr, explains why we get along great...). I'm not going to tell you about his private life, but his sense of humor is a lot more normal than the nutcases in black metal....
