GMD Poll: Top 10 Metal Albums of 1995

yeah, no country

might be their favorite release for me (WHW)

I'm usually stuck between Of Empires Forlorn and Vast Oceans. Their latest album was fucking awful though. Won't blind buy a new album from them again.

Yeah since Vast Oceans Lachrymose they've gone downhill and in the worst way possible; totally fucking boring.

If they totally changed their style and went for something new and different, but flopped, I could at least respect it.

Instead they took their established style and blandified it into nothingness. Such a shame, they were one of the greats.

I think no country is saying they are best when they are whiny, sad etc. they seem to move away from that style with every release. it's like if Warning decided to make a trad doom album, it just wouldn't (likely) add up.

WHW are best when whiny, sad etc. I agree with that and why i think lovesongs is one of their best

i was basically saying i get the impression they work more on instinct and feeling than using their heads, which might account for wild inconstencies. i don't really think of them as great *songwriters*, i.e. VAST OCEANS is more about the emotional depths of each individual passage rather than how those passages fit and flow together, for me anyways. even when i love them i find them a little shallow and can see how they'd have the potential to put out some dross.

I have an idea for this game. Have the person (or persons) who rated each album highest in the top 10 submit a song from the album for people to listen to. So that way a ~10 song playlist is made to accompany the results. Would be nice to actually hear the results and not just list them, and some of the albums not everyone has heard before.

I don't always listen to death metal, but when I do...

1. Tankard - The Tankard
2. Vader - De Profundis
3. Electric Wizard - Electric Wizard
4. Stratovarius - Fourth Dimension
5. Saint Vitus - Die Healing
6. Flotsam and Jetsam - Drift
7. Trouble - Plastic Green Head
8. Savatage - Dead Winter Dead
9. Blitzkrieg - Unholy Trinity
10. Motörhead - Sacrifice

I like the idea as well. Let's go and do it for 1992 and 1986. What happens when 2 or more people had the same album the highest and they all suggest different tracks?

Oh okay. I disagree that being able to create songs with deep emotional content isn't a form of good songwriting but I get what you're saying.

cool idea! should i consult people via PM before announcing the results so the songs can be posted with the results? or do we just do that shit after the results are announced?

there are gonna be cases where a lot of people placed that album at the same ranking (i.e. four people had ATG at number 1 last time), so i'm not sure if someone should be picked arbitrarily or they should have a vote or volunteer or what. if anyone has any thoughts say so.

edit: i posted about this in the '92 thread.

@no country for old wainds When are you gonna show us your list?

a while yet, still relistening to stuff and trying a few 'deaf spots'. ideally i'd like to get ahead of the game and post my list not long after the threads are posted, but i don't think that's gonna happen this round lol
