Anyone got any death metal recommendations for this year?

It’s a tough year for someone that doesn’t like brutal death or death grind in general.

If I had to try and hazard some recs....

I don’t necessarily dislike brutal death as much as I haven’t found too many albums I like. So I’m not completely opposed to the genre. I’ve got into Deeds of Flesh over the past few years for example.

I’ll give these a listen, cheers.

Even though their most recent two albums were vast improvements, Lost Soul's Ubermensch: The Death of God was pretty good. As was Insision's Beneath the Folds of Flesh.

Was checking my RYM wishlist for 2002 and Apotheosis' Farthest from the Sun was on it for some reason. While it's definitely not making my top 10 for the year, I'd take it over most/all other symphoblack I can think of that I've heard. The pseudo-classical synth wank was actually pretty good, even.

Apotheosis will make my list for sure. Can't really think of any album that embodies the spirit of Tolkien better.

One-man band from Malta as I recall? Disappeared from sight after this one effort.

Yeah this is pretty good so far! Some interesting melodic sections and a couple of killer riffs. Doesn’t sound like it came out in 2002 at all. Shame that the vocals aren’t the best. Kinda remind me of the vocals on Slumber of Sullen Eyes, only nowhere near as good.
