I think Strapping Young Lad's Alien is being underappreciated here. Imo it is one of metal's most emotionally charged representations of someone at wits end. Then again im one of those DT fans that felt like pretty much everything he touched until the DTP (post-Addicted) was gold, so maybe im just biased. Best DT vocal performance ever otherwise though.

Even as a diehard DT fan I agree, though im certain that I am much less focused on the riff than you are. Still albums like Alien hit an emotional level that even most 'extreme metal' dont quite hit imo. As for Devy's guitar album, Accelerated Evolution is his peak. Just ignore the vocal lines, smoke a joint, and you will probably enjoy it. I know too much not to recommend the atmospheric masterpiece that is Terria to you.

Welp, I just counted and I've heard almost 40 albums from this year lol. Most won't make the Top 10 but I will have a list to provide soon.

This is around the time I was really getting into the genre so lots of stuff between 2003 and 2008 is metalcore or Gothenburger type metal or mainstream. Naildown is like a poor man's Children of Bodom but I would venture that their debut is better than anything COB ever released.

They have good songs strewn about their discography but the main good part about that band is the drummer. That album did not hold up through the years.

Never been much into DT's solo stuff, but I remember 2005 was a pivotal year in shaping my taste in metal and Alien was instrumental in this change. I remember going to see Fear Factory for which they opened up for. After that I went to go pick up Alien and was put onto Bolt Thrower by a guy working at the record shop at that time.

Really strong album except Loch Ness, which I find clunky and cheesy. Unfortunately, it's the longest song as well. Still might make my list.
