They're not, they got 1 album that is largely overrated. It's good, don't get me wrong...but OVERRATED.

Fucking all of them.

The reason that Wintersun is special is because not only is the music written brilliantly, but there is nothing else that sounds like it. There literally is not a single band that sounds like Wintersun, even early Ensiferum sounds entirely different.

What makes Wintersun special for me (and I agree that people idolize Jari too much) is the music. He processes his melodies, adds varieties, small details and modulates them. There's a parallel to the old classical composers that I didn't find in any other metal composer. (Please tell me if you know others)
In my opinion there's the big difference between neo classical metal - often reduced to pedal tone licks, harmonic minor and "classical instruments" - and composing in a classical way.
Old Malmsteen was more focussed on his guitar playing because he didn't have the technical possibilities in the past. In Malmsteens later works which have a strong classical vibe he always want's to show his playing skills and wants to be the main guy.
