Metallica was the first band i ever loved at the ripe old age of 11. I still have a soft spot for them, and more melodic/progressive kinds of thrash, but i don't know too many bands of the style. My favorites are probably too obvious to everyone here, but i always liked the sound of bands like testament, heathen, and helstar.

Are there any hidden gems out there of a more melodic style of thrash that i need to hear? I did some looking a while back to dig some up, but i ended up mostly finding kreator-ish thrash, which i like, but not quite the throbby melodic sound i was looking for. Obviously there has to be more out there i've missed. Anyone got any recs for me?

Well, as an Englander, I'm obliged to offer our paultry offerings.

Xentrix were pretty much a 2nd rate Metallica clone that had their moments, and if you haven't heard Sabbat (particularly History of a Time to Come), you are definitely missing out.

Though a bit late, I'd also recommend early Skyclad. Intelligent, folk tinged thrash with EXCELLENT lyrics.

Sacred Reich on "The American Way" were VERY Metallica-esque too.

My brain hurts. I just finished night shift, having been awake now for 28 hours, and here I am posting about bands no one cares about. Can someone mail me a life please?

pshh, life is overrated. Actually, maybe not...

Xentrix is a name i've head a few times, but never actually heard them. Skyclad is friggin awesome haha, i love that band. I'll check out the others (Sacred Reich is another name i've seen so many times, but have yet to hear)

Sacred Reich , the American Way ^^

Wow dude, I just got into a shit load of this kind of music for the past year or two, some of my suggestions:

Sanctuary (be all and end all of what you are seeking)
Helstar (more speed than thrash)
Fates Warning (progressive)
Overkill (get "The Years Of Decay", and listen to "Who Tends the Fire" )
Imagika (listen to "Devils on Both Sides")
Iced Earth (not so hidden, but earlier stuff is awesome)

Have fun and share your findings dude.:headbang:

"Melodic thrash" hmm kinda hard to define
Sanctuary, Helstar and especially Fates Warning were definately not thrash. The first 2 were just influenced by thrash.

Anyway, the more appropriate band that can be put under the "melodic thrash" genre is probably Agent Steel. Pure Maiden melodies with raw thrash energy, riffing and rhythms. Watchtower also have a fair amount of melody in them, "Energetic Dissasembly" is their thrash-iest album. Realm's "Endless War" is also a very good choice, and last but not least, the tech-thrash masterpiece of Toxik called "Think This".

Paradox - Heresy
Hallows Eve - Tales of Terror
Toxik - World Circus and their other disc already mentioned

Edit: if you're willing to travel the Iced Earth route then do yourself a favor and check these out
Shah - Beware, and Escape from Mind

Maybe because Melodic Thrash doesn't exactly have a lot to choose from huh and I was mainly going off him mentioning Helstar.

You need Metal Church if you havent already got some, plus some Liege Lord particularly master control as Dodens noted.

The problem is you need to hear these bands for yourself - most of the bands mentioned so far have good qualities, whether they appeal to you is another thing - so I suggest heading somewhere you can preview some sound samples and progress from there.

Lääz Rockit "Annihilation Principle", "Nothing'$ $acred" and "Know Your Enemy"
Xentrix "For Whose Advantage?"
Forbidden "Twisted into Form" (not obscure but just in case)

Scary Erik... two bands I was going to mention as well. Definitely seconding the Laaz Rockit (typed the lazy American way) and Forbidden recommendations.

Doden's, another thumbs way up at his list. It will be right on track for what you're looking for.

You may also want to track down some Toxik, any of theirs.

K, what the hell is Helstar then? Speed? I guess I was getting at the melodic part...

Thanks for the suggestions though, what a list...
