Define the styles of thrash

So Bay Area = Exodus, Testament, Overkill, etc?

Exodus,Testament, Heathen, Old metallica, Megadeth, Forbidden, Vio-Lence , Death Angel etc.. etc.. to me it's just Geographical.. alot of them try to copy Metallica's style of old (1983-86 era) including Overkill.. i remember seeing a Overkill video in the old MTV Headbanger's ball in the late 80's where the guitarist was playing the same guitar Hetfield was and looked exactly like Hetfield .. same clothes, same hair , same onstage mannerisms LOL .. i always hated Overkill after i saw that video.. i think this was around 1988 when And Justice for All came out and i could already see the writing on the wall about where Metallica's music was heading... anyways with the exception of Overkill i think most bands had their own style.. the so called Bay Area style, German style etc.. is just Geographical names for the different scenes and bands (much like in Rap with the West/East Coast thing though to me it all sounds the same) with no musical differences or very little if any... two or 3 other great bands that most people dont mention much are D.R.I., Sacred Reich and Dark Angel...

Yeah...Overkill sounds nothing like Metallica, with the exception of their older NWOBHM influences...

They also started before Metallica.

I dont care if they sound like Metallica or not but the whole wearing the black clothes, frizzy long blond hair , white guitar (i forget the actual model name of the guitar James used back then), black wrist bands etc.. etc. on that video totally turned me off to them.. especially when i seem to be the only one (among me and my friends and other metalheads i knew at the time) back in 1988 to think that Metallica was selling out when And Justice For All came out.. i dont know if you ever saw the video Jean Pierre but if you did you would barf... :yuk:

I've seen all their music videos...I don't know what you mean, man. :p

Especially since Bobby Blitz was solely vocal, and his mannerisms were decidedly unMetallica-like.

Is it true that Overkill invented thrash?

Overkill invented thrash LOL :tickled: ... i would give credit to some of the NWOBHM bands and Motorhead.. it just evolved from there in the U.S. Bay area scene with Metallica, Exodus etc.. since they were influenced by NWOBHM/Motorhead and made it their own...

Some NWOBMH is borderline thrash. And some NWOBHB bands had songs that can be considered thrash. Hell, even Black Sabbath had some some songs that can be considered thrash. Metallica and Overkill were probably the first bands playing all thrash songs.

That's what I suspected, I'm not really looking for music more founded on punk than metal, so I doubt I'd appreciate them that much.

What about Nuclear Assault, I hear they're quite punky, but are they more of a thrash band overall?

Nuclear Assault's very very East Coast, with the clear punk influence and the slow mosh breaks. They're definitely thrash metal, but closer to punk than Overkill or Anthrax. They're also kinda inconsistent–spend too much time being silly and punkish when they should be THRASHING YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF. They've got some amazing tunes, though; check out "Cross of Iron," "Trail of Tears," "Something Wicked," and a buncha others which I can't remember.

Nuclear Assault are not to be overlooked, but fuck the Crossover shit like DRI, Cryptic Slaughter, etc.

What about Flotsam and Jetsam?

They're another band I know nothing about, I've never heard any of their stuff. What style of thrash do they play, are they worth checking out and what is their best release?

get their first two cds....they are quite good

I've only heard No Place...the guitar tone is monstrously brutal, and the singer is great. A few mediocre songs, but a great ablum nonetheless.
