High Quality Heir Apparent Video

..as the saying goes, you can't please all the people all the time. That's certainly clear from this thread. For the record, I LOVED Ghost Reveries, easily the most musically interesting Opeth record in my opinion, and the best sounding as well. Every song is a surprise on that record to me. Even the much maligned TGC, the intro has some of my favourite Lopez drumming, really swinging and groovy. I don't really have a clear opinion on this song as I can't hear Mike's vocal very well and that's very important for me in deciding whether I like it or not.

I have to say whoever said that "Mike has lowered his creative standard" based on this clip appears to be over judgemental..

I like it. Several really badass riffs and solos...my only gripe would be that the song seems kind of schizo. Transitions from part to part were a little too sudden and when they hit a really good riff they didn't play it enough. IMO if you find a good riff stick with it for a little bit, no need to switch it up too much if it works...it's almost wasting a great riff by not utilizing it enough in a song.

But that's just nitpicking. I can't wait to hear it on the album.

You're still wrong anyway.
They used to play with Marshall JCM 800s way back, definitely up to Still Life and possibly some on Blackwater Park, I believe some of Blackwater Park is a Peavey 5150 as well though. They probably made the switch to Laney a little before Ghost Reveries
edit: Nevermind, they started using Laney much before GR, probably a little before Deliverance.

^That happens with all music. It also happens with movies, girls and food (try eating as much caviar as you can, you'll hate it after you barf). Solution: moderation.

^Haha yeah, exactly. Also, I know everyone has their own opinion and everything but its not the actual studio version so don't base too much off it the album is in your hands.

If it were a Soundboard recording then you could at least hear the song alot better, I'm waiting it out until we see a studio version of it. You can't judge anything off of poor audio quality.

Is it me or does this song get worse everytime I hear it!?

You really need to stop listening to the song. Judging a song based on not only a live recording, but the first time the band has played the song outside of rehearsals/the studio (which was quite some time ago) is not constructive at all. Any nuances that are in the studio version are obviously lost, the quality is not incredibly clear, Mikael said in his blog
The new one came out fine, even though it had the most mistakes…mainly technical mistakes.

The song is obviously less accessible than almost anything they have done, showcasing a lot of different mood swings, and is supposedly the heaviest number on the record...it's going to take time before the majority of people can get into it.

Oh and for the record, a whole lot of "rofl"s and "wtf"s at Mikael lowering his creative standards. The man has been the one constant factor in the band almost since it was conceived...he cares about the work he puts out far more than you ever will. After all, it's his name in the credits.

They didn't bring their own gear, that's why. Axe isn't playing Pearl normally either...

I could be wrong but I thought I heard on the recent radio interview posted that Fredrik at least confirmed he is using the new Marshall Vintage/Modern amps and not the Laney. Mike wasn't asked, I don't think..

yeah okay I'll shut up now. I hear you guys, i got pissed when people kept disrespecting TGC at first, I HOPE WATERSHED KICKS ASS. I wonder when we'll get to hear the studio version??????? and get to see the album art work?

Awesome, reminds a bit of The Leper Affinity, as technical or even more.

Eh, I'm going to have to disagree.
The Leper Affinity is more upbeat overall, and the guitar leads are much more intricate as well as the guitar solos.

some of you are judging this song on the back of hearing it with awful sound quality.

whats the point in that? Even Mike said they made some technical fuck ups during that song.

typical whingeing cunts on here as always.

Bad sound quality or not, I had a blast the three times I listened to it. Can't wait for the album!
