Horror Movie Fans?

The scariest things I've seen lately would be the survivorman show, especially the one where he was adrift at sea in little lifeboat. Some of the conpspiracy theory videos out on the web with the unification of north america and a new currency, the implanting of microchips as the new form of ID,etc.

Horror movies these days aren't scary per se, society has become so desensitized you have to have torture porn just to be shocking and even that has been overdone and everyone is pretty much acclimated to it. And then you have movies that turn the volume up real high on the soundtrack and make things pop up so your natural response is to react to it.

I think the movie that scared me the most as a child would have to be "Return of the Living Dead", espcially the zombie that came out of the canister.

Probably the only thing that are still terrifying are UFOs because of the whole mystery surrounding them and the abduction stories.

Then there are the Shadow People lol, but it's usually a cat jumping to catch a butterfly.

You have occult stuff out there too that can be sort of scary if you give it any credence, but I guess I'm going off on a tangent here, this is about scary movies. I think nothing is scarier then just living real life.

just stumbled across this tidbit.

Supposedly there is a new Hammer flim being made, shot in London, even Ingrid Pitt will be in it. Here is the imdb link and a copy/paste of the synopsis. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1104731/

"The story follows the last hours of freedom of British soldier Ed, who is flying out to Iraq in the morning. With the help of his best friend Necro, he spends his last night in the UK tracking down his missing girlfriend Jen, last seen partying with a bizarre group of night time ravers led by the enigmatic Melech. As he catches up with Jen at a rave deep in a remote forest, Ed discovers that Melechs crowd, who are throwing the event, are looking for more than a night of hedonistic abandon, and that not everyone will make it through to dawn"

Doesn't that sound like a really lame premise? Does to me anyhow...

30 Days of Night seems better to me.

30 Days of Night seems better to me.

Sometimes lame is good, but in this case it's not the plot that is what is cool about it. The fact it's a hammer film is what is. They made films like Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter among others. The plot is kinda reminiscent of Lost Boys though.

When I first read that title I cringed and thought of Return of the Living Dead "Rave to the Grave" which was on SCI-FI last year. Now that was a bad movie. It's sister movie Necropolis was slightly better but was just as bad, they did have a cyborg zombie though, +1 for that.

Unfortunately, what it sounds like to me is that they've taken a brand name and stamped it on a product. I love a lot of Hammer's films, and I'd like to see new Hammer movies. But I want to see new Hammer movies. Films with those same aesthetics that people remember and loved. Period settings would be nice - and they proved the first time around that they could do those things on a shoestring budget. I'll give this thing a chance, but I hope they change the name first. Anything with "Rave" in the title is an immediate turnoff.

I agree with you, I'm willing to give it a shot. Those Hammer films are more a byproduct of the times they were made in then just a style of film making, they feel like the 60's/70's films that they are, but so do any other movies from that time period. Of course it was cheaper and actors even in the low budget movies had more respect for their craft.

To do a period piece these days requires a grand budget and actors who can pull it off and there are few that can. Johnny Depp being one of them, and I can't wait to see Sweeny Todd this december and the Dark Shadows remake.

back to this particular title, it seems like it's direct to video, but it's being made in the UK with UK actors, that alone is a big plus in my book. For example the movie Razor Blade Smile, was pretty good in my opinion anyway. It didn't seem like much but the twist ending made me like it.

I'm hoping this turns out to be in a similar vein(no pun intended) of acceptability.

A lot of the old Hammer Studio films are pretty cool. I grew up with a lot of them, so they have a certain feel to me that is different from most anything else. Check out any of the vampire movies, or if you want something different and creepy, maybe "Quatermass and the Pit".

Good summery of Candyman above. It had a few more levels to it than most horror films. There is a slasher aspect to it, but so much more.

Same with the Hellraiser movies. There is gore, but there is just a different feel to them. The first ones especially, but there are gems mixed in there. Take "Inferno" for example, with a corrupt cops haunted by his passions. "Deader" was pretty cool as well. Both of them aren't really super connected to the original mythos going on in the first movies.

The best ones that I've seen in the theater this year were:

Bug (its a really good movie, psychologically frightening at times)

Just watched this last night. Pretty decent job by Ashley Judd, certainly one of her better roles. It was an interesting idea, and one of the better psychological thrillers to come out recently. Couldn't have cost much to make, considering the whole movie basically took place in one room.

I love horror movies. My all time favs are Evil Dead, Exorcist, Poltergist, the Original Amittyville Horror, Motel Hell, Alien, Aliens, the Puppet Master movies, Pumpkin head omg I can't name them all. Besides Progpower & Disneyland, Horror conventions are my thing. Screamfest is in a few weeks I'm gonna be so broke!!!

I am a fan of the old school and old old school horror movies. The new stuff is a little to much to handle sometime. I did see the Rob Zombie "Halloween" though and it was cool.

Some of my Faves:

Anything with or about Vampires
Halloween - Original
Nightmare on Elm Street
Hellraiser
Sleepy Hallow
Anything by M.Night S.
Early Stephen King
Classic Frankenstien, Werewolf
and Exorcist
to name a few..

Here's to hoping that "30 Days of Night" helps bring vampires back to the horror fold.

Personal faves for me would include:
Feast
Jaws!!!
most anything by John Carpenter
Bubba Ho-Tep
a 60's movie called Jack the Giant Killer
Cube
Anyone heard the news of a Repairman Jack movie? Hopefully there are some fans on the forum. For those not familiar with him, check out a book called "The Tomb" by F. Paul Wilson. Shockingly good and scary with an extremely cool main character (Jack) and villian (The Rakosh).

Alright, I jumped in this conversation way too late... So I haven't finished reading all the posts yet...

If no one has mentioned AUDITION yet, I am mentioning it now. A really CREEPY Asian (is that the PC term?) film. The first 3/4 of the movie are pretty slow, but the last 1/4 more than makes up for it.

Other movies I've enjoyed:

THE ABANDONED
REINCARNATION (RINNE)- VERY twisted another Japanese movie
Saw (the original)
House on Haunted Hill (original)
13 Ghosts
The Ring (Original only- actually walked out 1/2 through the second one and demanded my money back.)
Ringu (Japanese version-true original of The Ring)
Evil Dead
Army of Darkness
The Gate

And I've got a ton of old circa 1950 horror movies on DVD. Some of them are horrible, some of them are really fucking good.

I'm very picky on good horror movies (although I do love the B rated horror films...) but to be honest I'm the chick at the movies that laughs uncontrollably at 99% of the "horror" movies that have come out with in the last 10 years- either because they are so badly done or have such a shallow plot line, it's hard to see why ANYONE could/would be scared at them.

There are quite a few scary movies I like - but I get more wigged out over just flat out weirdness... Like The Cell... come on.. between him hanging from the ceiling and then the horse getting cut in half.. yeah... WEIRD = gave me the heebie jeebies...

However, I'm kinda interested to see what that new vampire flick, 30 Days of Night, is all about... Kinda reminds me of the black n' white Nosferatu look.. and THAT is scary/ freaky lookin'... Kinda like the vamps in Blade II - when their faces opened up, I was like 'Oh m'damn!!'
