How important are vocals to you? For me it tends to very from genre to genre. Usually if the vocals are clean they are a big part of the music. If they are harsh they are still important, but the other parts are more focused. Now I know some of you may say that you look at it as a whole.

Vocals are extremely important. and like you it also depends on the genre...:) if a band has shitty vocals there is really no pint listning to it..imho...:)

I'm a die hard fan of Floyd, Genesis, Tull, and several folk artists. So yeah, vocals are important.

But with metal, they don't have to be; I can appreciate musical composition and accept that the vocals take more of a back seat. However, when metal bands have good vocals/lyrics, that just makes them all the better to me. Kamelot, Kiuas, Borknagar, Evergrey, Primordial, Katatonia, etc all have lyrics that I appreciate and add to the music for me.

Then there are bands with laughable lyrics that I still love: Blind Guardian, Falconer, Iced Earth, Sabaton, Turisas (although their lyrics are actually cool sometimes, and more frequently on their new album).

Bad vox can ruin a band. Good vox can make a band.

However, many of my favourite songs are entirely instrumental, so I'm going to say:

Vox are important for conveying the message of metal, and the chilling shivers that run down your spine, but when it comes to bone-crushing heaviness, they just can't deliver.

I always found Slayer vocals a bit same-ish, I've got to admit. They make up for it with their godly musicianship.

That's why I said it depends on the genre. The kind of metal you listen to guitars and instruments seem like they have a greater importance. While a lot of the bands I listen to, the vocals are a big part.

I like Iced Earth lyrics.
