I bought a new car (the "I wanna be like Gugs" thread)...

Haven't had a problem yet. Just got a recall notice in the mail the other day but it was only if you got in an accident and feared your rear axle might have been damaged, so kind of a bogus recall? I haven't used her much in the past year, but I think she's over 30k miles

good to hear. i have a 2013 2.5se and its been great for me (until the deer incident three weeks ago, but thats not the car's fault- although i did discover that they are basically made out of fragile plastic).

i was asking because ive heard some horror stories about my exact car. i know that they have had problems over the years, but it was my understanding that the new models had most of the old kinks worked out. i knew two people with 2005 jettas and the things fucking fell apart before 90k (bad catalytic converters, total radiator failure, etc)

brand new 1.5 years ago and i already have 37,000 on it. hopefully its problem free until 100k, that would be good enough for me.

I just remembered the time Lurch bought a new Mazda 3 and traded it back in like 15 minutes later because the gas mileage wasn't good enough

Yeah, i've heard good things about Jetta's but mines the diesel model which according to my diesel mechanic brudda, means it'll last longer. I put like 20k on in the first year but I live in a stupid hippie town with bikes and busses and everything in walking distance so she's been lame. I think I want 8 good years outta my car and i'll be content

I'm on year 5 of my car (miles just around 85k). Was in an accident which was no fun on my insurance (shared fault) but I've only had one issue of note (fuel intake sensor going bad) which cost significant money. She's paid off as of the end of the year and I really want to get another 3-4 years out of it and enjoy the lack of car payments.

It's a Ford Fusion should anyone give two shits

yesterday we bought a '93 volvo 850 glt for ~$650

to replace my woman's rotting volkswagen

the audi, of course, is still running like a dream

this volvo has got to be the worst purchase of my life

100% shit car, i will never touch a volvo again in my life

meanwhile, the 1988 audi just keeps truckin' and giving no fucks

Which one of you guys bought a Jetta somewhat recently?

we have a 1995 jetta (european version is called vento) rotting in our front yard

it's the best fuckin car mechanically, but unfortunately prone to rusting in critical places

i know this isn't helpful at all

I remember this because I tried to get worse mileage than lurch, in a 'Speed no less, and failed.

I no longer expect a vehicle to be problem free for more than 10 years or 100k miles. Car payments are just one more stupid bill, oh well.

AUDI UBER ALLES

sorry to hear about the volvo. my father bought an 850 for my brother as his first car. it was in totally mint condition at the time, just over 90,000 miles. he probably put $10-14k into it by the time it was sold again (5 years and 60,000 miles later). just some really, really crazy failures that he didnt even know were possible.

some random guy bought it from my dad. he said he was totally psyched at the low price, because he was able to have a mechanic fix it up for cheap (friend of the family or something). my dad saw him two weeks later and the car had been like mechanically rebuilt, the guy was thrilled.

flash forward to not even two months later: my dad runs into the guy again and he says "it was scrapped for $500, never touching a volvo again."

i was temped to write out this story when i saw your original post. best of luck, friend.

also: sold my saab 93 aero last year at 80k, mechanically in perfect condition. i saw this guy at the liquor store and he said three weeks after he bought it, an engine coil burned up and melted a bunch of hoses/engine components. $3500 repair. YIKES, definitely dodged that bullet.

tl;dr- if you want to get a swedish car in america, make sure its an old rear-wheel drive volvo or a brand new volvo. or a saab that is pre-1992

aaaaaaaaaaannnd there we go. i am officially 112 miles outside of my warranty, and the windshield wipers have stopped functioning. i cannot catch a fucking break this year (so far)

total insanity... this car is 1.5 years old with 36k and shit like this is already failing?

Hopefully your dealer is cool and they still cover it.

I've always almost wanted a Volvo until this thread.

I would like my next car to be an older Land Rover.

It won't be of course, but that sure would be neato.

heh i hope.

and dude... if i had millions of dollars, i would move to the frozen north and just tear up snow all day in an old Land Rover Defender. it would break down several times every week, but it would still be really cool

There are some really funny articles on Jalopnik about Land Rover ownership. I can't remember the author but he also writes for The Truth Abour Cars.
Want a Land Rover? Better get a backup ride for when it breaks....which I guess is constantly.

They are quite notorious for needing constant repair, the finest in British vehicular engineering. I think the original Series and Defender are different though, or at least when they break you can rebuild them with a basic tool set.

It's fucking sad that they are killing off the OG version at the end of this year, after a 67 year run (which is quite impressive). Thankfully the Jeep, where the Land Rover originally came from, remains as good as it ever was.

fuck jeeps; fuck land rovers; be like varg vikernes and get a lada niva

Rx0noLL.jpg

already outdated when it came out in 1977 and nothing's changed since then

The rabbit hole of the internet over the last 30 minutes:

-Lada Niva and camouflage pants
-Vladimir Putin's political career
-Varg's arrest in France
-Dieudonné and double standards
-Asking Alexandria lost their singer

I'm not sure how that last one is related, perhaps all roads lead to metalcore?

EDIT: http://englishrussia.com/2007/10/12/underwater-trial/

hahahaha

 @ the Volvo bit. My XC90 has 111,000 on it now and it's been really reliable for the past 20,000 or so.......mainly because I've already replaced all the parts ha
Seriously though, it's needed some really suspect repairs (ie water pump at 80,000??) but the rest have been a result of its absurdly heavy curb weight (control arms, tie rods, front suspension shit). Otherwise it's remarkably comfortable and has a great sound system.

My '99 S70's interior literally fell apart. They were experimenting with soy based adhesives at the time and uhh well....yeah. That said, the seats remain some of the most comfortable ever produced and the overall design is geared toward something called visibility. It's a peculiar concept. I get in and can see other cars and stuff instead of relying on cameras and alarms and other gayness.
The best part is I've never changed the oil. Ever. In two plus years. I'm not sure if there's even any in it.
