If you like Opeth you might also like....

This all depends on why you like Opeth...For rhythm? for melody? For their twisted combinations of riffs? For their gneral "differentness"?

AFAIC, Opeth and Enslaved are the two best bands in metal today. They have elements that just click with me. The others mentioned are cool, ut haven't caught on yet. IF there is anyone open-minded here, I HIGHLY suggest checking out the newest Enslaved album, and giving it time. It's pure musical brilliance in my opinion. Mardraum and Eld might appeal to you too. Mardraum might be a little too "out there" for some, but it rules as well.

And if you dig Opeth, you might want to check a few bands from this forum (Dave Caswell, Farmakon, Thales, Archaeon, Wars of Winter).

Hell there's a lot more great artists here too, (Stygian Apothegym had some cool stuff) that are worth checking out. Not necessarily Opth-like, but great in their own way.

I'm a huge Neurosis fan! If you haven't heard much of them I recommend listening to The Sun That Never Sets first. If you like Neurosis already you need to get the DVD of Sun That Never Sets!!! It's the trippiest crazyiest thing I've ever seen! They're in the studio workin' on another album right now.

Mastodon is great. Very high energy and very short songs. heh I saw them a few times, the vocalist is really nice. Like everyone else, I don't see the comparison with them to Opeth.. =\

Just to clarify a bit, and I'm far from annoyed (if perchance this comes off that way), but I never meant to imply that any of the bands I mentioned at the beginning of this thread sound "like" Opeth. Well, maybe Enslaved does a bit.....Rather, I think Opeth is such an odd mix of influences that I assume people who listen to them are kind of open minded and therefore might get into stuff from other genres that fits into that strange (sort of) "anything goes" style of Opeth, though I realize that doesn't really cover it either. Point is, I think that the average fan of Opeth would also like the following:
Isis, Sigur Ros, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Bjork (I'm not kidding), and a million other bands that sound not remotely like Opeth. Still, there is some universal thing there that I can't quite put my finger on in that each band is kind of organic sounding to me, rather than over-produced, say, or at least run of the mill.

I can safely say that my top three bands (these days) are Sigur Ros, Opeth, and Tool, in no particular order. Each is drastically different from the last, but then again I see them as all the same somehow.......
I'm not sure I'm making my point here, but Opeth, to me, is a band that defies categorization. If a person found Opeth simply because they love, above all other things, Death Metal, then I doubt very much that they will like Sigur Ros. If, however, one individual portion of Opeth's vast influences is not the sole reason they found the band, then chances are they'll see the like-qualities in the bands I mention (and the one's that others have). None of that is a put down in any sense of the word. I happen to dig the hell out of Death Metal (and have ever since Possessed coined the term on their amazing (honest, check it out) "Seven Churches" album.
To be frank about it, I could see why a fan of, say, Simon and Garfunkle might like Opeth, and yet like no other metal band (not just Damnation either). 'Course, such types are rare, but for what it's worth....I happen to like Simon and Garfunkle.....
Metal is my drug of choice, and I'm glad in a perverse way that most people I know don't understand the shear beauty of it, but somehow, and you can laugh at me here, I don't see a huge difference between Opeth, and, oh I don't know, Crosby, Stills and Nash......(especially the vocal harmonies).
Sorry 'bout the rant (though it really isn't a rant).....but I couldn't agree with you all more, Mastodon sounds absolutely nothing like Opeth. Only that they seem somehow to fit into the same box to me, broad such as it is......

you might not though, who can say? You're such a hot tempered bunch....

Have you ever heard Opeth? Did you know they sound nothing like any of those bands? Please shut up since you obviously don't have a clue.

Sorry about the timing. I'm not here all day like some people are.

Oh and you're definitely right, viking black metal is very similar to Opeth. Do you know what you're talking about or do you need to shut up too?

You really don't understand anything, do you? But that's OK, it's not your fault you lack the skills to comprehend this discussion.
