I think those bands are Progressive Rock while bands such as SX are Progressive Metal.
 
Yep. Classic stuff from these, and many other groups, qualify as prog before the word came in vogue. While our current definition of prog may or may not include these groups and artists, they still deserve to be noted for laying the groundwork, so to speak.
