Impulse FAQ :)

Hi everyone

I have a randall rg50 combo, and i want to buy a cab for it, but i don't have much money now.
I only have an effect loop, no poweramp direct out, so i wanted to ask you if i need to simulate a power amp or no when i record the guitar signal out of the effect loop.
And where can i find free power amp only simulation or impulse (without cab impulse in same time) ?

Are impulses only for recording using Amplitube or Pods? I just throw a mic in front of my mic and record? Can I use it that way or no?

I also have Amplitube 2 but don't use it? Using amplitube would the quality match my amp?

Hi all,

I got a question about impulse :
As said by dcdanman in the 1st post, an impulse is an emulation of everything past the pre-amp (so, power amp, cab, mic, and the mic pre-amp).
So, when I use, for example, Revalver MKIII, I must use only the pre-amp section before boogex ?
Or the head (with poweramp) ?
My problem in the 2nd case is that I use 2 poweramp, no ?
But in the 1st case I can't play with the presence knob.
Maybe impulse are always made with presence knob at 0 ? (I've found few impulses with presence at 8 : engl V30)
There aren't any informations about this settings in the name of the impluses (in general...)

Sorry to be a bit long, but I try to understand what I do & why I do it like that...
Thank for your answers...

Yeah, there's been some debate about this, and people have posted comparisons - I guess I would say try using both just the preamp in Revalver and then the whole "head" model, and go with what sounds best! :) (which in the end is all that matters, it's not like you're gonna do any damage)

Hmm that makes me wonder if I could get a better sound by using my Impulses in Revalver and then messing with the Lows,Highs,Distortion, and Crunch knobs...

BUT SINCE I BOUGHT REVALVER HP I CANT USE MY OWN IMPULSES WITH IT GRRR

You can only disable the entire poweramp/cab sim, So like when its disabled you cant use the Lows,Highs,Distortion, and Crunch knobs on the power amp. And you cant select "No Cab"

Well disabling the entire poweramp/cab sim doesn't seem so bad; after all, you've got the tone controls in the pre-amp, and then you could do an eq after Boogex ;) (or even use the built in eq in Boogex, though I've never tried)

I'm finding it really hard to get rid of some of the noise coming through with my clean guitar signal :( I'm using a Schecter C-7 -> A pretty basic PA -> my sound card, and it's creating a lot of noise/buzzing, noise gate doesn't really solve the problem either. I think it could be the PA, am I better to purchase something like an M-Audio Recording interface box?

Edit: I'm using Cubase SX3 as my host. That probably has nothing to do with it but oh well.

You should certainly eliminate the PA and the current sound card as soon as possible. They're not designed for fidelity (especially the sound card), so invest in an interface of some kind. I've had very little trouble with noise out of my C-7 Blackjack so I don't expect the guitar to be a problem; the only remaining parts are then your PA and sound card.

Ahh, another Jeff (Geoff in my case) on the forum, thats awesome! I will try to get an M-Audio Recording interface box asap, I'd have to agree that the guitar is probably not an issue, I haven't had it for very long and the previous owner took very good care of it, do you reckon its worth getting the wiring in the C-7 checked by a professional anyway?

Unless you notice very strange noises out of an ordinary amp I wouldn't bother. Those guitars are shielded just fine, so I wouldn't expect problems out of their wiring - considering the massive amount of noise you'll likely face from the sound card itself I wouldn't be surprised if moving to a new interface fixed that. I don't need to set my noise gate threshold above -50dB with an 'entry-level' interface, or above -60dB with a PodXT... since 'ordinary' sound cards have inputs rarely better than 'my six-year-old idiot kid can blather on endlessly over CS and the noise doesn't overpower his whiny yammering' I would expect your noise problems to come from those gizmos.

when doing a DI with my toneport gx, do i do it clean or with a tone i have that is with distortion?

the toneport is a DI itself, depends what you want to do with that tone afterwards.
For reamping or final-distorted tone(with toneport amps) ?
You can set - No Amp and record clean... you can also record with a Preamp sim if you want, just a suggestion...
