See if that works by chance...

Thanks dude!

Ok here's my review for the song. I dont know why but this song reminds me Everything's Gone from Siren Charms but far better. This one is a lot of heavier than Battles + SC thats for sure. And dont know why but it feels like song is a big chorus, verses doesnt feel like verses, its just one big that chorus repeats again and again. I love the "We-You" part. I dont know what I should feel about the last chorus, autotune feels weird, dont think Anders can sing those parts live. Solo is nothing exceptional but still pretty good and I love the screams before the solo, awesome!

Overall I like the song, I would give 7,9/10. The only thing bothers me is that autotune parts.

I will be going to their show this Friday. Usually hang out with them after the show for a bit to grab a few drinks. Any questions I should ask??? Lol.

Ask them to join this forum :D would be hilarious.

Thanks for uploading the song. It's actually not bad. To quote Krofius, "dem growlz". Anders is finally bringing those lower register growls he does live into the studio. They sound great. Major thumbs up for that side of things. The chorus is Battles formula which I'm not a huge fan of, although Anders' vocals sound tolerable albeit autotuned into oblivion. It's fine I guess but that kind of summed up Battles in general - it's fine, I guess. I don't think it's anything special. The solo for once sounds like it's had some thought put into it so that's nice.

If this is the single (normally the most commercial or conventional track on the album) then maybe this album really will be a return to a more metal sound. Or it'll go the total opposite direction and this will actually be the most metal song on the album. We'll see I suppose.

First few listens I'd give this a 6.5/10 - not bad, but the chorus lets it down.

Just ask them why. Don't add anything. And wait for their answer.

Ask them if the single is more metal or less metal than the rest of the album.

You are right!

But it annoys me to no end that I can't remember which IF songs those heavy riffs resemble to. It sounds very familiar, like something from STYE or ASOP.

I also dig the outro chorus; if he can deliver that energy live it would be bonkers.
Delight and Angers. Not the riffs but the chorus melodies. Just sing it over these riffs.

I wonder if it's too late for them to come back to metal. Or if the album is goilg to be as metal as this song. The mix of cleans with screams in the chorus is nice. But I still don't like it.
I'm not expecting the album to be mostly sounding like this, I think it's going to be very varied, kinda like Battles. I'm just glad there's a song with somewhat frequent growls, last song was probably F(r)iend, although sadly they had the scream in the chorus high in the mix, and the growl overdubbed in the back, wish it would be reversed or just the growl (like he did on Used & Abused DVD performance).
I'm a huge fan of scream/growl overdubs though, and they sound great on I Am Above at least.

Like someone said, the intro riff actually sounds like a variation of Bullet Ride.

Don’t actually tell them about this forum. They might suicide after reading how hard we are on them.

It was even worse in the early 2000's actually. As far as I remember this forum originally used to be the official In Flames forum. But when Reroute came out/leaked, people were not only shitting all over the album but there were some malicious rumors about IF being spread as well, concerning their private lives and shit. That's where the band drew the line and requested the closing down of the forum. Later it was re-opened, but as "non-official forum" because IF deliberately wanted to distance themselves from this place.

Interesting, I think I remember coming by super casually around that time but at that point I was more into IRC than forums. Didn’t know it was official though, I thought that was the everdying forums etc that you had to pay for.

To be fair there were so many bands pissed about online rumors in the 1998-2001 kind of time frame when the internet was young and people didn’t know how to act. Several bands even wrote songs about it.

Then they should probably be happy about the futile discussions that we're having here.

Just heard "I Am Above."

It's an Engel song! That's pretty much all there is to it, I think. The bridge gave me some "In Plain View" vibes, so I'd say that was my favorite part of the song. The track has a decent groove to it and a certain catchiness that, in a way, reminded me of the In Flames I first got into back in 2004. That was nice.

Anders sounds decent. Not sure what he was going for at the very end of the song. Strange vocal melody. But that's just the requisite Anders weirdness, I suppose.

Chorus is take it or leave it. Not really my thing but it's not bad.

The biggest thing for me here is that, even though this doesn't sound like anything from Lunar Strain to Siren Charms, and in fact sounds more like generic B-tier Gothenburg like Engel (which is enjoyable but doesn't get me excited), it actually doesn't sound like the SiriusXM Octane bait that was Battles. I couldn't stand how blatantly commercial Battles sounded, and this feels like a step away from that. That's a huge relief to me. I prefer this to nearly everything on that album. It's still commercial, of course, but I mean, welcome to modern In Flames.

I'm content with this song.

Lol yeah. Discussion on here is seriously tame compared to how it used to be. When Reroute came out some of the old school fans legitimately took it as a personal insult. They were seething with rage. Nowadays some of us poke fun at Anders' silly lyrics, but that's really about as far as it goes.

I don't remember Everdying being quite as bad though. Discussion on there was pretty balanced - ArchY was a bigger IF fanboy than Krofius though, so there might have been some quite heavy handed moderation. Can't really recall.

Oh hi you lot, bit late to the party.... forgot this thing existed after the Battles forum died off

On that topic, after 2 years, Battles hasn't aged well. I praised it a lot at the time but now there are only a couple of songs I listen to off it, it was way too commercialised and neutered.

As for I Am Above, my expectations for this album were low after how dissapointing battles was to me (for context I love SC, despite its obvious and many flaws which i'll openly admit) But after that interview in july where Anders compared the new stuff to SoaP|F (my first In Flames album, the album that introduced me to metal when it came out, thanks to my big brother - I was 13 when it came out) I was hyped straight away, but still doubtful. Having now heard the song, I don't know what else I could have asked for, Its heavier than the last couple, Its better structured, Anders is finally using hs deep growls in the studio again, and the solo isn't a wah-wah-wank fest that Bjorn was guitly of last time around. Lyrics are a bit painful at times, and to me the drums still sound programmed like batlles (surprised no-one else mentioned that yet?) but considering their output recently, it's an unexpected return to form. Chorus is very divisive but I fall on the 'love it' side, hate me XD

Oh, and it's good to be back guys \m/

Welcome back mate. Stick around! Another one I can strike off the inactive posters list  wonderful.

Also yes, agree, the drums sound really shit on this track. Soulless. They really miss Daniel behind the drumkit.

And now that it has proven to be a decent song no-one cares about the lyrics anymore... Just as some people said.

Yeah, pretty much. The fact those lyrics are growled helps a lot - if they had been sung then hooo boy, that would have been lame. Growling makes lame lyrics so much more tolerable though.

It's difficult to add personality to the druns ehen you don't even know what's your status in the band. So you just do what you're told to do.
