I decided to write this review only because I ended up liking the album and want to make a point that internet piracy doesn't necesarily have dire effects on the artists out there. Rather than give a detailed review of each song, I'll keep this brief.

For those of you that hated Reroute to Remain, you may find some solice in this album. It does not bring the group backwards by any means, so you can forget the prospect of another jester race album. In fact many of the folk riffs seen in the older songs are gone entirely. It reminds me more or less of Clayman stylistically. As might be expected, Anders has increased the use of his "clean" vocals, but surprisingly enough he pulls it off more often than not this time around. There is only one track on the album where he uses the "whisper" technique, and for the most part his combination of screams and clean notes really work well. You never get the feeling that your listening to a "nu-metal" album.

As usual the guitars are catchy as hell, but in a different sort of way. It sounds more "modern" if you will. They've also encorporated more electronic sounds, but they seem to be placed better than on the last album and overall they don't damage anything. The songs are really quite brilliant. My only complaint is that there aren't nearly enough leads and solos.

The drumming left something to be desired, but it wasn't bad. Like I said, everything seems to fit. The Bass on the other hand has become more of a force than I've ever heard in any of their previous work.

Track for track this is a catchy, no nonsense album with plenty to love. I found myself headbanging only thirty seconds in. If you liked Clayman, you'll probably like this better. I believe I speak for all of us when I say I'm relieved it's not another nu-metal rip off. Buy this album!

In Flames has been my fav band for like 7 years now. I was able to download STYE the day it leaked, and I was blown away. I was a little confused when I first heard the tracks from The Quiet Place EP, but they grew on me really quick. When I listened to the whole album I was so fucking happy they didnt take a turn for the worse. When RTR came out I was kinda disappointed. While I enjoyed it, it was my least favorite album they had done. When I first heard the track listing for STYE I was thinking "oh god, some of these song titles sound like emo, especially this one... 'F(r)iend'. I couldnt have been more wrong. F(r)iend is heavy as hell, its like straight death metal, and even sounds like black metal at certain points, crazy shit. The music on the rest of the album is very complex, catchy, and GOOD.

I agree that the album doesnt have nearly enough guitar solos, which is kinda surprising seeing as how Jesper and Bjorn are two of the best metal guitarists out there. I made a post about this on the swedish metal forums, but ill say it agian, this is the In Flames "Projector" album.

When Dark Tranquillity released projector it was totally different from the minds i, or the gallery, but it was still REALLY good. It was an experiment for Dark Tranquillity, they wanted to try some new things so their music didnt become boring. Since then they have been able to take that experimental sound from Projector and blend it with their older stuff, and record Haven, and Damage Done (which is their best album, IMO). I think thats what In Flames is doing with STYE. It has some oldschool In Flames style riffs in there, and some totally new stuff as well. They will continue to bring in some oldschool in flames style (insane solos, ect...) to their future albums, and continue to blow us away.

I take back what I said about the drumming, after listening to it in my car's system I realized a lot of it was getting lost in my crap headphones.

And like the guy above me said, I think it's only going to get better from here.

I have a review for this album too:

Makes Reroute to Remain sound like Blut und Krieg. This is worthless faggotry. Avoid at all costs. Praise this and you're an asshat.

Actually, no. If you want to like shitty music, then like it, I don't lose anything, you do. That review was a gentle mockery of the shit-fest that is In Flames' new album. In Flames were never even good to begin with, but this is disgusting commercial mallcore. I laugh, I do.

I'm really enjoying this album. There are a few songs that are just kinda so-so, but more than half the album consists of really rocking songs. f(r)iend is my favorite so far - while i can't be so bold with some of the other songs, I'll say that anyone that dares to call 'f(r)iend' nu metal or pop metal or any of the other trite labels is simply trying too hard to apply the label or is just blindly and stubbornly opposed to in flames. there is a relative lack of solos on the album, but that's not to say they aren't there - they're just kinda short and uninvolved. One thing I've noticed, and I guess it's a matter of perception, is that it seems many of the more 'busy' guitar parts are kinda further back in the mix, perhaps to give more weight to the heavier, more simple parts that seem to be more in the forefront of the mix. The drums sound kinda strange at parts, and while they're not incredibly exciting for the most part, daniel does some pretty cool shit here and there, and they compliment the other instruments nicely. i agree that, while i'm not a big fan of anders' clean vocals, they do sound somewhat better than previous releases - that's not to say they're particularly great or anything - just 'somewhat better.' all in all, i think if you gave up on in flames after the jester race and won't listen to anything newer, there's no way you'll like this album - if you gave up on them after reroute, you'll probably like at least a few songs if not the album as a whole - if you've liked all of their releases, you are pretty much guaranteed to enjoy this.

You wouldn't know what mallcore was if it came up and fucked you in your inbread deformed ass.

If you never liked In Flames to begin with then your posting here was completely pointless. Face it, In Flames has always had a bit of "pop" sound to them, and their melodies have always been major key(happy sounding). If you don't like them that's fine, but don't judge their musicianship. They played a big part in the melodic death metal movement, and they deserve credit at least for that. I happen to enjoy their music because the everyday sludge that is most other metal(there are several exceptions) can get a bit old, and it's nice to have fresh sounds like In Flames. Seriously, why does everything have to be done with the most agressive growl possible in a minor key in order to be considered good? The day you put out an album half as good as The Jester Race, is the day I respect that bullshit opinion. I'm sick of pretentious know it alls like you. No off you go to listen to some cannibal corpse, or some other pornogrind bullshit. Dumbass.

I'm sure it'd be better than your dad.

Yes. Credit. For playing a big part in the Gothenburg movement. Credit. Yes.

How is In Flames even remotely fresh? Particularly nowadays when out of 150 new bands, there's about a hundred clones of their old stuff. I don't recall mentioning the vocals. Obviously, I could write a better album than The Jester Race if I had the technical ability. Then again, technical proficiency alone never makes a good band. And In Flames are hardly that proficient in comparison to most metal bands. Why would I listen to Cannibal Corpse? I like GOOD music. I don't like SHIT music. Cannibal Corpse and In Flames are SHIT music.

They have more skill and more knowlege of their instruments than you could ever dream of.
And they can't write good music to save their lives. Which is what really matters when you're judging the quality of a band's music. Fruitcake.

Don't even bother with this guy, hes already admitted that he feels he is in fact superior to most people, and that it is fact that his taste in music is superior. Just ignore him.

As for the album, i haven't listened to it enough to make a full review on it, but i'm liking it. I do like RTR better though, but I would imagine that more people would like this album better, especially the ones who didn't like RTR's experimentation.

Just ignore him, like I'm ignoring the FACT that innovations by the best bands in the genre lead to its progression, therefore metal is NOT ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE.

As for the album, i haven't listened to it enough to make a full review on it, but i'm liking it, because I like crap music I'm afraid. I do like RTR better though because that's such a CLASSIC, but I would imagine that more people would like this album better, especially the ones who didn't like RTR's SUCKERY. I'm now going to dive headfirst off a high mountain-top.
Have a good trip.

I mentioned cannibal corpse because that's the type of shit most people who bash on this genre listen to. Sorry for assuming you listen to that type of rubbish.

In regard to there being a hundred clones of their old stuff-that's EXACTLY why they're fresh. Because they pioneered that sound.

Technical proficency never made a good band huh? Dream Theater, Children of Bodom and Metallica all suck ass at writing music IMHO. Yet somehow they're recognized the world over as awesome bands. Children of Bodom in particular is nothing but technical skill. I happen to think that In Flames has a knack for creating a great, uplifting vibe. Don't get me wrong, they don't hold a candle to bands like edge of sanity or Opeth, but that doesn't mean it's a crime to like them. Face it, there aren't really that many other death metal bands that can put a person in a GOOD mood. I mean, even if they aren't that great they certainly aren't the worst thing a person could listen to, and they aren't worthy of all this scorn.

But hey, maybe your right. Maybe In Flames are the most horrendously suck ass band making music today and I'm really missing out. What do you listen to?

It's quite alright. You dislike Cannibal Corpse, this gives you merit points.

But that sound tends to be just mainstream verse-chorus sped up Iron Maiden-worship. Limp Bizkit pioneered the nu-metal sound, this doesn't mean I respect them.

Lots of shitty bands are recognised as being good all over the world. This doesn't mean that they are. Metallica are hardly that technically proficient, and their old stuff was written pretty well. The other two are hardly good. As for putting me in a good mood, In Flames just fill me with hatred for shitty mainstream metal culture.

A few death metal bands who actually know how to use melody:
At the Gates (pre-Terminal Spirit Disease)
Necrophobic (The Nocturnal Silence)
Sacramentum (Far Away From The Sun)
Arghoslent
The Chasm

God DAMN man! A hater of both children of bodom and Dream Theater? I guess that's where you and I differ, because I enjoy both of those bands regardless of their weak compositional skills. I think your deal is the whole "anti-mainstream" attitude that some many lovers of the underground feel inclined to employ. That or you just have a very different taste in music than me.

As for your list, I own everything by At the Gates, so at least we can agree on that band. I've heard some stuff by necrophobic(at least I think I have), but not I don't own anything. I'll have to check out those other bands. Might have to wait a while though because I just bought Purgatory Afterglow and Moontower(swano of course) and the Opeth dvd, so I'm a bit low on pocket money for a couple weeks or so.

I generally am 'anti-mainstream', but not just for the sake of being so. It's because mainstream music appeals to the majority - this is why it is mainstream. The majority are idiots with appalling taste.

Actually, In Flames song-writing is great, they incorporate different styles, actually know how to play melodic music and make it all fit together. Your opinion is your opinion, but saying they suck is retarded, you might not like them, but a lot of people do. Also, for the record, they are better song-writers than At the Gates were. At the Gates used similar song structures in almost all of their songs. Don't get me wrong, I think they were awesome and made some kick ass music, but they weren't very versatile. Oh, and please, don't call me fruit cake, flattery will get you nowhere.

So you base compositional quality simply on how many styles a band incorporates into their music?
