Hi, I'm trying to expand my knowledge of metal.
I'm looking for bands that are brutal and heavy yet melodic.
For example bands such as:
Arch Enemy (before 'anthems of rebellion)
Nonexist
Hearse
Gardenian
In Flames

I would appreciate it if you could introduce me to new bands,
because i'm desperate in wanting to listen to new music.
thanks

Arsis.

Imagine Carcass's Heartwork album mixed with some Immortal and Exodus riffs as well as a dose of Suffocation's Effigy of the Forgotten....and still sounding fresh and totally heavy-as-shit.

Intestine Baalism are pretty good. Also, check out Arghoslent as a previous poster suggested. I've actually never heard them but everyone around here seems to enjoy fellating their nazi cocks endlessly so I'm guessing they're quite good.

Yeah;

Intestine Baalism
Arghoslent
Avulsed
Neuraxis
Lykathe
Arsis
Anata
Amon Amarth

That sort of shiznitz to get you started. Mind, those bands really are heavy and melodic, not pansy shit like In Flames or Arch Enemy etc.

If you want other good bands more along those 'softer' lines, then check-out;

Solar Dawn
Omnium Gatherum
Beyond The Embrace (Against the Elements album)
Shadow
Infliction
Dark Tranquillity
A Canorous Quintet
Eucharist

Sacrilege - Lost in the Beauty You Slay
Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon
Novembre - Classica, Novembrine Waltz

Novembre is the least brutal, but has the most obvious melodies, and are my personal favorite.

I've always thought Hypocrisy were a bit....meh...
Well I'm an unabashed fanboy so I love all their albums, but I think Abducted and The Final Chapter are the best examples of mixed brutality and melody I've ever heard. Out of curiosity, are you familiar with the song A Coming Race?

Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus
At the Gates - The Red in the Sky Is Ours
Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey
Cenotaph - Riding our Black Oceans
Crown of Thorns - Eternal Death
Crypt of Kerberos - World of Myths
Desultory - Into Eternity
Epitaph - Seeming Salvation
Eucharist - A Velvet Creation
Fester - Winter of Sin
Mordicus - Dances From Left
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Phlebotomized - Immense, Intense, Suspense
Unanimated - Ancient God of Evil

Those in bold are essential, the others highly recommended.

If Aeternus, Sacramentum and The Chasm count then you should make them your priority. Otherwise, early At the Gates, Eucharist, Arghoslent and early Amorphis will do rather nicely.

check out dimension zero, a side project of jesper stromblad from in flames. basically they continued on the path that in flames left some time ago...brutal, fast, heavy and melodic as hell. silent night fever is a must own album.
