The stock fan on the 980X is pretty decent, are you going to use that or put on a 3rd party one? I would probably just keep the stock one if I wan't OCing put it in quiet mode and you won't hear it.

I didn't get a chance to benchmark that dual 6 core system properly, but I ran DAWbenchmark test (the one in the graph posted earlier) and it could load more plugins then there were in the test! So it can do over 320 (that was at 64 and 128 samples) in the test. That has got to be overkill for nearly everyone!

The 980X will be a very nice system, enjoy!

They should revamp the test to include 320 instances of Nebula running 9 kernel programs. It'll be an even playing field again

I plan to keep the stock fan. I want the computer to be as silent as my Mac but something tells me I won't get that 100%. I'm hoping to get close. I plan to use a fan less video card. I haven't had to buy a hard drive in years so I'm hoping the newer ones aren't loud as shit too.

I need advice on video card, hard drives (non ssd) & ssd, and anything that could help with keeping volume down.

What do you suggest? Mb have changed, since the last time I build, and last system I built was intel board. I trust Asus off the bat, but don't know much about gigabyte.

You should be able to get the system down to quieter then your MAC Pro to be honest, WD hard disks are good, you can put them in silent enclosures to make them really quiet.

The PSU needs to be good and I haven't used the one you mention, Bequiet or Seasonic models will be very quiet, the dual X5680 system I ran a 1000W Be Quiet on it and along with two of the new intel stock fans it was pretty much inaudible, the new intel fan is as quiet as a Noctua 9 which is the biggest ones you can put in 4u case, it actually performs slightly better.

And I trust Gigabyte much more then I trust Asus (or intel) in the higher end I trust Supermicro the most but for a standard X58 I wouldn't pay the premium over a UD3(a) or UD5

Any low powered GPU will be fine, I like the HD4350
