Well first off I recommend Daylight dies,(also from my state)
As for the American metal scene, yah its pretty shitty, my country made nu metal and metalcore pretty popular(limp bizkit, slipknot) excuse me while I puke, so that says alot, my last fm is mainly made up of Scandinavian bands, which in my honest opinion produces the best bands easily. Although our thrash and death scene back in the day was killer!
