Is Death condidered Death Metal???

Songwriting is in line with death metal of that era plus more technical and jazzy breaks, they had harsh/growling vocals and were rhythm-heavy. Why wouldn't they be progressive/technical death metal?
Death has death metal vocals, which makes it death metal. Death metal is alo more varied than thrash anyways.

Atheist are undeniably Death Metal. Unconventional, yes, particularly for their time, but the riffs are still very much Death Metal. Listen to 'Enthralled in Essence' for an extremely obvious example.
Early Death, yeah... of fucking course it's Death Metal. I haven't listened to Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic or TSoP since probably around 2002, and I only recall what the latter sounds like; a mess of progressive wanking bullshit. No Death Metal at all.

It's technical/progressive death metal, there is definite death metal structure in mid-era Death and denying this is probably a dumb idea. Later Death is much less DM but still enough to be considered progressive death metal...it just sucks.

V5, I guess, it's because I often tend to associate the band with its target audience, and Atheist appeal to thousands of progheads worldwide. In addition, the band's music is not imbued with the sort of morbid atmosphere that you get from other bands in the genre.

I've only heard the early albums. What would later Death be comparable to? Atheist, or are they just an example? Meshuggah maybe?

Death metal is many, many things. I would say Atheist is definitely death metal, but Cynic is just progressive extreme metal.

When I think of Death, I think of the song "Zombie Ritual" from their debut album. That song is definitely Death Metal, which is what their early period is called by. As for their later stuff, I can't speak for it but Progressive Death Metal seems to be the prevailing view.
