Possessed's song "Death Metal" came out before Mantas changed their name to Death, but after Mantas had already released their demo titled "Death By Metal".

Hellhammer, Running Wild, Dark Avenger and Helloween released a split in 1984 titled Death Metal, the same year Possessed released that demo. It's not to my knowledge which came first within the year.

I'd like to know where Shredhead is hearing that Death is not DM. Death, NOT being DM is a completely acinine statement. Yes TSOP is Progressive Death, and yes it rules.

Yes its true, the term Death metal was created by Americans in Possessed. Possessed ep was out first, but Death and Morbid ANgel were a huge part of that scene and helped build what it is today.

Like Atheist, for instance. I never really understood why Atheist are considered death metal.

Songwriting is in line with death metal of that era plus more technical and jazzy breaks, they had harsh/growling vocals and were rhythm-heavy. Why wouldn't they be progressive/technical death metal?
This.

I think the thing that is least death metal of them are the vocals, which don't matter anyways. And like V5 said, even those are harsh. (I actually like them more than the typical growl)

And yes, Death is Death metal.

Yes, Death is definitely DM.
I've heard stuff off the early albums that was definitely death metal, but mostly I'm going on the two I have, ITP and SOP, which are supposedly their least death metal. They definitely sound like death metal to me. Thrashy and progressive, but death metal, definitely.

Atheist is along the lines of Progressive Death Metal, but I still have a really hard time lumping them in with those bands. If I had to call them something that's what I would call them... Although they have some Thrash tendencies as well.

I don't think of Cynic as Death Metal at all really. Just Progressive Metal. They're even a bit harder to classify because they just kind of did their own thing.

Death on the other hand are much easier to categorize. True, they've done things differently from time to time, but they just cleaned up their tightness & production more than anything, not that it constitutes better songwriting... I think ITP is the best thing they've ever done, but even that is not Progressive.

I honestly never understood why people call TSoP Progressive... I can't for the life of me figure that one out. To my ears Progressive music shifts direction much more. Even Atheist does the shift thing a lot more. I just think they modernized their Death Metal sound with TSoP, & the outcome was not very good. That album only has a couple of sleeper hits on it & it's not enjoyable all the way through.

TBH I'm surprised as shit that more people didn't pick the no option.

If Possessed is proto-Death Metal, then Death is Death Metal.

Spot on, this is the evolution of the genre in it's shortest form. lol :)

Progressive would simply be a greater explination for Death's Death Metal. Just like it'd be the same for Crimson Glory's Power Metal.

It's kind of strange to see Atheist appealing to fans of old school death metal. When I think of OSDM, they're one of the last bands to spring to mind. There's nothing "ancient" in their sound. They're more of a musicians' band, for people who appreciate mindtwisting technicality, odd time changes, etc.

Who said to you they weren't Death Metal?
You're referring to me? I dunno, I just don't hear it. Heavy technical thrash is what I would call them.

For instance, no one will question that Immolation's Dawn of Possession is death metal. But Atheist? That's not entirely clear.
