Jeff Loomis - the recording chronicles (2011)

Hey Aaron! Haven't been here in a long ass time, but I'm actually NOT surprised to see that you hooked up with God and are doing BIG things now. I knew that the local Reason advice would morph into something more, because you're a good dude. Congrats man!

Holy balls man, I haven't seen you on these boards in like five years! Thanks! I don't post here much anymore (compared to a few years ago) but you were always one of my favorite contributors back in the day. And thanks for the Crown D-75 power amp tip (for use with NS-10s), haha!

I have been listening to a track from this upcoming album ever since it was sent to me and this is what I have to say:

1. Jeff is a moster guitarist as always
2. Dirk did an incredible job drumming on this album
3. Aaron has done an insane/incredible/perfect mix for this album. Sounds so awesome!

I cannot wait to hear the masters and be able to hear what Jen's does!

Cool. So Aaron since the mix was sent to Jens that means the album is done? tracking reamping etc?

Woah!!! It feels like 2006 again! Welcome back from the dead!! How was your stay??

Aaron. Out of curiosity, what was the most challenging part of the mixing process for you? Did you struggle with anything in terms of nailing the right sound? Or was it smooth sailing?

Well, it's always nice to be able to engineer everything instead of only mixing, because then I'm totally in charge of making sure I get tracks captured that are compatible with my vision for the end result. In the case of this project, I was at the helm for the core of everything, so there were no surprises when it came time for mixing.

That being said, I would say that the hardest thing was probably just getting the drum mix all dialed in. Jeff and I tend to be more fans of clean compressed/sample augmented Sneap type metal drum sounds, while Dirk has always leaned much more towards a very natural sound that doesn't lose track of his natural feel...and let's face it—Dirk has a ton of unique finesse and ghosting in his playing that a lot of other drummers don't. So, before we even started tracking anything, I knew it was going to be a challenge to satisfy both myself and Jeff, while also keeping the drums natural enough that Dirk would be excited and do justice to his playing. My goal was to end up with something that sounds clean, punchy, and modern, while also sounding believably real, and I really feel good about how it came out! Not to mention, Dirk is really thrilled about the drum sound, which was flattering, to say the least. The only thing he wanted me to change was to turn up the ride in a few spots!

Awesome!
Which amp(s)/cab(s) did make it on the album then?

I'll wait until you guys have heard a track and see if anyone has any guesses ;)

great. thanks for taking the time to keep us posted and congrats man i am sure you have done a great job!
