Just got MAYH

sknight

Are You Morbid?
It's good, but very different from the BP and later. I like it, but it's very different from how they sound now, like they were starting to form their current sound.

How is Morningrise and Still Life? Do they resemble the later stuff a bit more?

"Morningrise" resides with "Orchid" in their own little era, more dual guitar, Maidenesque riff style. My favorite Opeth style, but only because I choose to pick a favorite.

"Still Life" resides with MAYH in that era, very similar style...both concept albums, for some reason not my favorite Opeth style...doesn't mean it isn't good. Just like the early and later stuff a little better.

So nothing before "Blackwater Park" sounds like that or "Deliverance/Damantion". IMO, those 3 albums are each in an era of their own. One reason why this band is so awesome...they can change a little or a lot of their sound over time....and sound awesome no matter what.

Give it time...

My first ones were BWP, Deliverance and Damnation in that order. Then I got Still Life and was hooked immediately. Then I got MAYH and it took me awhile to get used to it. I was really disappointed, but now I really like it.

Now when I go to grab a cd, it's almost always MAYH or SL. I think right now, SL is in my Jeep's cd player and MAYH is in my portable cd player next to my bed. They are both by far Opeth's best two albums.

Now the other two are a source of bickering on this board. Morningrise is enerally described as a depressing record, and I like it less than most, but it still has its highlights. Advent is a great opener. Night and the Silent Water is a cool song (even though the band hates it). I like Nectar, even though it gets bashed on the board a lot. Black Rose Immortal is an amazing 20 minute epic that I dream of seeing live in concert. And the closer, To Bid You Farewell is a very sweet ballad. All in all, a disorganized but great record.

Their debut, Orchid, is by far my least favorite. I know many who agree with me, but I also know many who feel that it is their best. I think that's because listeners of Opeth come from varied musical tastes and so different aspects of their sound appeal to them more. I, for example, come from a heavy-metal / progressive rock background, which means that the more melodic stuff appeals to me better than the straight death metal. If you are into death metal, you will like Orchid.

So, here's what I want you to do:

1) Lock yourself in a room with a stereo that has speakers bigger than you, a comfortable recliner, and a week's supply of cocoa-puffs and beef jerky (okay, you may want access to a bathroom...) and do nothing but LISTEN to MAYH for 7 straight days. Before you know it, you will be in love with it (or psychotic... or both  )

2) Leave the room and go to your local cd store to purchase Still Life (perhaps a shower and shave first, though!). Repeat step 1 with your newly acquired album.

3) Continue the process with the final two albums.

4) After 1 month, you will emerge a better person!

Good Luck! I wish you success in the Opeth rehabilitation program.

LMFAO!!... :tickled: :tickled: :Spin: :Spin:

That's good stuff dude. I will say though that "Orchid" is still very progressive even if it seems to be very death. They do some of their most unique stuff on that album IMO. But certainly everyone needs to judge for themselves. Just buy them all, not a bad one in the bunch for sure...

In the end it's probably about longevity. With Opeth you'll find the albums that hook you instantly tend to lose their magic over time, whilst the ones you have to work to appreciate will last you much longer.

Morningrise and Still Life don't sound like the later stuff, no. The only resemblance I can draw is the introduction of the familiar 'lead/rhythm' format which Still Life brought to Opeth's sound. MAYH was more about each part being equivalent and equally prominent in the sonic spectrum, whilst Still Life started to bring in that 'Peter plays rhythm, Mike plays lead' etc. vice-versa sort of stuff. That and the fact that Still Life really introduced the repeating parts... they've become relatively common in their later albums.

Morningrise is a whole different thing altogether though. The only album it sounds alike to is Orchid.

As a footnote though, it's very important to give MAYH and SL your full attention. This means wait till its dark, sit/lie down with your best headphones, grab the lyric booklet, listen to the albums in their entirety without distraction and follow the story along. That's what unlocked the magic of Still LIfe for me.

Just go out now( right now) and buy Still Life. It is a pre-requisite for admission
to the Opeth School of Music. Don't come back to class unless you have Still Life
and have studied it! Now Go!

I cant disagree more on that part......Orchid for instance is the most emotional for me......the mellow parts are just stunning and the best that these band has ever written...it´s like dying when they start. You have these great DM parts and then its like......wah.....just buy it.

This is a very true fact

This applies to a lot more bands than just Opeth.

I agree that MAYH may take some more effort to click but once it does.. oh man! This one, along with Morningrise, maybe the hardest Opeth album's to get into for some people, but at the same time, these two are my top picks from their whole discography.

Morningrise is brilliant with its dark dirty sound and untamed songwriting, its absolutely aggressive/melancholic mood.
MAYH is the most complete album for me, it is perfect starting with the absolutely best lyrical content/story through its heavy/dirty sound (mike's vox too), excellent balance between distorted and clean, and the prevailing sadness in every little detail.
