i was reading a post by Anthony on the General music board replying to the Slipknot Rulz thread, and he said that his girlfriend considers him mad or something. which made me think (first time for everything) do people consider you mad/wierd because of the music you listen to? is there some sort of connection here between the music and madness? i suppose people say that because the music is not popular, therefore different, therefore wierd. i do find it annoying if people think that. anywho whats your thoughts.

I assume you're using the English version of mad, not American  . Anyways.. yes people probably think you're weird for not listening to what's in or cool. People think those who listen to numetal are weird, and they've at least heard of those shitty bands, when they hear band names they've never heard before it seems even worse. My friends think i'm weird for listening to "shitty" music, music they never even give a try or listen to.

Most people think my music is crap - the same people that listen to Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, etc.

I could care less - especially when someone thinks Opeth stinks - oh well, their loss, not mine

Once a former girlfriend of me told me that she touhght it was very strange that such a nice person like me could listen to this satanic and bad music. I laughed.
A time later a gave her a cd with diferent Opeth songs.
She loved it!!!!!!!!!

People who are not into this music see it as crap. Mostly because of the growls.

You just need the right sense of Dark Humour to Love SATAN:headbang: and his vocals or so everyone i know not into metal thinks it is him singing in his normal voice when i listen to growls or screams

Well, your musictaste reflects what's
going on in your mind, don't you think?
It's not like I'm thinkin' about satan all the time...
But the music really feels like "me"....

My boyfriend usually says that about the weird
music that he listens to "that's how everything
sounds like in my head", and it's true...
That counts for me as well,
when it comes to my taste of music....

But I'm not "mad" beacause I listen to all this
heavy stuff.... A mad person is someone who
takes everything too far....)
And when you take things too far,
you're ruining the beauty of it.
That's what I think anyway...

IF they say you are mad they are just saying you are socially inadecuate because you are out of the standart of most people. Thats what METAL is, metal bands just play music that expresses emotions are dont run away from violente or intense emotions but its not the only intense form of music. The tipical metal head is the one that makes it metal because he or she refuses to accept society standarts and seeks to be different but not alone so he identifies with a minority of like minded people trying to make a statement and that is what creates the image of the typical metalhead, or the weird goth kid or the super D&D geek or whatever.

Of course by no means im saying this is the only case this is just the typical case among the subculture and some of us choose to not even join a certain subculture and just appreciate the musical style as well as many other musical styles ( no not anything cause there isnt commercial music music cant be commercial cause its no longer music it becomes a product ). So what am i saying? You dont have to be part of a subculture because you like certain band and if you dont wanna be different or you like society and care about what people says about you, first of all YOU have not a mind to trastorn and become a mad person, second of all since I couldnt care less just learn to blend in society by being open minded about more musical styles or at least pretend and you should be fine

Most people think that I am a satanist, and some kind of freak. I guess I portray that some what for acting kind of strange. But once a person talks to me they usually realize that I am a lot more open minded, and thoughtful about what I do. I am not the type of person that just sits and dosn't talk to anyone, I usually talk to just about any one except for the "ghetto homies" :loco: But yes people do think I am angry and hateful and will eat babies.

hehe, I was talking to this guy and he was saying how much Homecoming sucked. He was telling me "Geez they didn't play any good music, just a bunch of that N'Sync crap and other pop" I was wondering "Is it possible he likes good music?" Then he says "I went up to the DJ and asked if he could play any Slipknot, he said no." Then I asked if he could play any Insane Clown Posse or Twiztid... From there I just kind of nodded and waited for the bell to ring.

Most people do not take the time to get used to the growls, thus quickly bashing it. In my opinion, growls just add that extra touch.....oooo I'm a sucker for growls and howls!

I have been called *mad* all my life (I assume this is due to my boisterous behaviour) last week a friend (out of nowhere) said "you scare me sometimes Jo, but I still love you"? ha ha ha 'realness' is a scarce quality in many these days.

people have such a preconceived notion of what "metal" is, that i have to admit i'm embarassed to say it when someone asks what i listen to. i always feel like i have to follow it up with this big explanation of "not radio metal, true metal, the kind that's actually musical, very close to classical actually, not the satanist crap...." blah blah blah. i always dread that question. and yet i would love to meet other like-minded people so i sometimes dive headfirst into such awkward-ending conversations, hoping they'll know what i'm talking about. but they never do. :bah:

but i actually dress very normal -- don't really look like any clique or type. i'm a jeans and tee-shirt type. sometimes hippie, sometimes ghetto, sometimes preppy, sometimes jappy, just whatever i feel like. i hate the metalheads that wear tight black jeans tucked into their black boots. they're just following trends like all the people they hate.

and as a tangent, you know what sucks? when the ones that got me into metal start listening to really wimpy shit. wimpy shit that's still emotional and interesting is fine, but that rarely describes "wimpy shit." :p i'm talking about just synths and some dude whispering -- no beat, no melodies. that isn't music! so then even the people i thought understood where i was coming from, don't. argh.

The very first time I heard death/black metal: ...oh..

Never in my life had I heard growls, but when I did, I had built myself up to liking these bands so much because of how people in the chat rooms talked about them, I didn't mind it. It was like this is how it is, and that is that. In fact I can't see why people can't just fucking accept it. What's the big deal? Are you too enveloped in your music to open yourself up to something different? People dont understand how black and death vocals are not the core of the music. They are there to represent the lyrics, the state of mind. They aren't fucking solos, they are as much a part of the music as the guitars. Haven't I gone through this before? Im getting de-ja-vous:lol:

I know, I got my friend to listen to some Opeth (yes he actually likes it :D ) His biggest complaint was "I don't like how you can't understand the lyrics, I just like being able to hear what they're saying but I can't" I explained most music is lyrically driven, but this isn't, it's musically driven, just read the lyrics while you listen and you'll quickly memorize them.

I think that many people look to music to relax them, they are not looking to be inspired, which is why many people listen to simplistic, mainstream music, they do not want to be challanged. I am just happy that even Opeth can relax me.
