metal

let me put my two cents in, too.

my discovery of metal (metal other than metallica and maiden) was in 2000 when i heard anathema's "alternative 4". it went all downhill after that. =) (but let me say this very clearly: of the thousands of bands i've heard in every genre...opeth is still my favorite band. i still get those chills when i listen to "still life" or "blackwater park".)
but somewhere along the road, i got into electronica and many other stuff, too. at the moment, apparently metal is just one of the musical genres i listen to and i dont find it superior over to any other genre at all.

nevertheless, for quite a long time, just like some of you here on the forum, i looked down upon some general genres of music and subgenres of metal...stuff like power metal and beauty and the beast metal. you know, all that fantasy stuff about dragons, princes and the whatnot.

but later it dawned upon me...some people just like that stuff. and thats all there is to it. some people like reading about kings, queens, monsters and all that escapist stuff, while some others, like me, prefer reading about and listening to stuff concerning real life and its problems. why should one be superior to the other? think about it, is our joking about or looking down upon someone else's taste gonna affect that person's favorites even by a slight bit? just let that person enjoy whatever the hell they listen to.

You don't need to feel personally insulted if you're irritated or frustrated with someone's behaviour, or if you retort in a discussion. Why not try to make this forum a more decent, more creative place for everyone by removing bashing of people's personal taste and beliefs and keep the bashing to the bands in question?

Absolutely correct, man. Whoever you are, you certainly appear to have common decency and intelligience. By the way, Arasmas, did you lose the key to that dark, dank basement you hang out in? You should ask wolfwood or what's his name widows puke if they have it. Go to Wal-mart and you can find bisqueen real cheap, as well, as vaseline. As long as you insult people with your arrogant posts, your leaving yourself open. And I depise the term metalhead. I am a music listener. Period.:heh:

It is rather perplexing that in the same post you praise someone's decency and intelligence and then go on to show a lack of the same yourself.

spot on, but people will still keep arguing whos taste is superior, it's like it goes in from the other ear and out from the other.

I couldn't have said better. Also Samn Dunn's documentaries were just great. Liked the first one better, though, but culturally it's very interesting. Anyways, we should stop saying it because it's getting pretty obvious by now (not for everyone, it seems) but talent, taste, good music, categories, good attitude, etc. are all subjective stuff and depends on personnal views. We should add a sticky threads that says that, and "therefore, you can bash anyone's taste, considering what has been said before". And ummm, some people talk about "metalheads", but who are they? Let's say I have pretty long hair, play guitar, go to metal shows, listen mostly to metal, like to headbang, like beer (¬¬ someone doesn't?) but am open-minded to other stuff (with my definition of talent²). Am I a metalhead?

2. When listening to music generally, I must consider two things. First, does it seems good to me, do I like it? Second, is there any particular talent shown? I believe that, before bashing any bands/music, you should consider the second question really seriously. And don't categorise everything, don't put all individuals/bands as a whole. It sucks.

I'd say arguing about how much metal sucks on a metal forum is the ultimate sign of stupidity. Or just boredom..

Everyone wanna show that their musical taste is better than anyone else, and metal is the worst/childish/most stupid genre, and they "grew out" of it and now they are listening to Jazz, Classical, and so on !!! and they are "ashamed" of what they were listening to yet they don't say it.
ah Aramas made a succeful threat by insulting people and he didn't show up again lol

What does Gorgoroth represent?
....Satan.
What does Satan embody, for you?
...Freedom.

Well if the metalheads are thinking like this, then of course they are fucking morons and Arasmas is right..

But of course anyone who has their mind sane is above this:erk:

^ I guess you don't understand what Satanism is all about. It's not about killing Christians and squirrels in ritual murders and overturning gravestones, it's about being free from all shackles and living your life as you wish. So perfectly sane responses by Gaahl to the questions.

^ Well there are different types of Satanists actually. There are those who follow LaVey, who do not believe in the existence of Satan himself but see it more as a principle or embodiment of an ideal. These are basically atheists. There are others who do believe in the real Satan and God and Christ and the like but they choose to follow Satan instead. I was a bit into LaVeyan Satanism about 8 years ago but moved on from it. There sure are a bunch of stereotypes of Satanism tho and most people lash out against it without knowing what it really is. There are, as in any group, extremists as well who are the ones you see killing, burning Churches and the like.
