Ouch.

Anyway, be warned, there's a bad omen afoot. The Opeth board is finally shutting down, a few years after going through a period like this one. I hope the people 'in charge' make better decisions on governing this place and don't tread the same path.

Care to clue us into what happened at The Opeth board?!

Well it's a fairly self-explanatory scenario.

There used to be a core userbase that over time established friendships and became regulars. As they started 'socializing' more and more on the board they were given a split, 'Opeth Off-topic forum' to chat about unrelated stuff in. That forum turned into a haven of troll-ridden, abusive, goatse shite, so it was canned. Those members threw a fit and left the forum and created their own 'private' off-topic board. In the rift that was created a bunch of newbies took over and the place gradually turned from having mature discussions that reflected a true love of the band to 'who iz melinda!?' and other infantile threads polluting the place.

I was a pretty prolific poster and one of the few 'older guys' left at this point. It somehow came to a head where the community at large decided an active moderator was needed to look after the place and sort out the riff raff. So being one of the most active members on the board at the time, I was voted in (remember how I mentioned it's just a popularity contest?).

I did my best with the place, I really did. I set out some clear cut guidelines and tried to let people get away with as much as possible, while clamping down on the worst of it, but it was obvious that you can't stem the tide of morons with an iron fist. No matter how many trolls you ban, or how many threads you move, if the forum INHERENTLY attracts juvenile nimrods, you will lose. So after a few years I called it quits and started solely frequenting this place, leaving the Opeth board in the hands of Mr Samsara. It seems that things didn't go so well since I left because that place kept degenerating into what it is today, and apparently even the band finally got fed up with it.

I'm sure you can kind of see the parallels in the first part of the story. We're currently at the end of the 'popularity contest', so what happens next is up to you guys eh.

ok guys,
Andy has given me mod-powers. Thanks for your trust.
trolls beware! :)

Great to hear that, I voted for ya. Just please don't erase any thread that says S 2.0 or SoloC in the title please. hailz Fuhrer Lasse :kickass:

btw coming from that thread about marcus and felix... how IS your name pronounced? I've always thought it's like the dog lassie haha

edit: sad thing that of the Opeth forum, I didn't frequent there although it's my favorite band, I don't tend to be around band specific forums. Hope it doesn't happen here too

Thanks for taking the time to write that up Ermz. I understand why you're concerned that this forum may deteriorate into somthing similar and I imagine that Lasse will have his work cut out to an extent.
I'm thinking of setting up a personal wiki or some form of website where I can store all of the valuable 'goto' information found here in case this forum ever sees its end. Would you guys find something of the sort beneficial? I know there's a wiki out there already (that has Andy's 5150 settings etc. on it) but I'm thinking of something a bit more 'modern' with frequent updates.

Definitely. A super-wiki would be a fantastic idea, and greatly overdue.

To compile all of Andy's tips over the years, as well as Glenn's drum guide, Jens and Colin's little bits of input and the various other things that have popped up in one place would be great.

Glad you think so Ermz. I'll start working on it. For some reason, I find wikis unmanageable at times and a freaking nightmare to navigate, so I'm leaning more towards a traditional website approach. Another reason is that after numerous requests from quite a few members here, I setup a music production wiki with the aid of Ahjteam. Its purpose was to catalogue gear and techniques used on specific albums, however no one really participated and it hasn't seen any active use since July.
Of course, if I'm to do such a thing, I really hope that people won't mind me grabbing their guides/tutorials etc., rewriting certain parts if necessary (especially if I had to correct Ryan's spelling the whole time!) and posting it to the site. So long as credit is given, I'm sure most here won't mind. What do you guys think?

this would be awesome

yeah, like that noise101 thing which was great

Yeah Lasse, that was the one I was referring to, I just couldn't remember the name of it for the life of me. Noise101 has the main guides that have been here for quite some time alright, but I mean - even the discussion regarding mic positioning inches away from the grill (I refuse to credit Adam D!) that's happening here at the moment has got some great information, with examples. This kinda stuff needs to be gathered into a central informational hub.

would be awesome if you could bring that up date, or do a new one....many kisses, pretty please

Digitaldeath, have you considered linking to your page in your signature? I didn't even think of that when I was wondering where this stuff would be archived for blackmail purposes, and you could probably enlist help much more easily if people knew there was anything to be done...

Hey Jeff, yes I considered it, but personally, I'm not so much interested in the production gear and techniques used in past recordings. I am much more interested in a general rock/metal production website - an 'updated Noise101' kind of website. If the wiki I previously setup was for the purpose of archiving the tips, guides, tutorials, brief gear reviews, samples etc. to be seen around here, I would certainly have linked to it in my sig.
I'll get to work on this as soon as I can, I'll more than likely use Wordpress. Even though it's a blogging solution, it'll allow me to add content no matter where I am, especially now that there's an iPhone app which makes this even easier. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm listening. By the way, I apologise for derailing the thread, but I am simply searching for solutions to the problems people are having with this forum at the moment.

Niall.
