On a personal level I can't stand the majority of newer stuff (there are a few exceptions), but it's a world away from the Detroit techno scene that started it all. The likes of Jeff Mills and Plastikman shit all over the stuff being churned out in recent years by Carl Cox and Sven Vath.
Techno has a huge worldwide fanbase, it may be harder to understand the appeal to non-fans than most genres, but I don't think it is the most universally hated.

My initial reaction to the question would be to say something like drone or grindcore, but they are pobably not widely enough known. 'tis a toughie...

I don't think the average person knows grindcore or drone.I would say nu-metal is universally hated by a lot of people,and not just metalheads.

Well Happy Hardcore is not liked by even people who are in electronica, so I don't agree right there

I think Happy Hardcore could be close, but I would say the same things on it's appeal that I did for techno. The biggest clubs in Europe regularly sell out Happy Harcore nights and happy hardcore compilations are huge money makers.
