I do find more merit in opera vs. country, but I think if you put it to the populous at large I think opera would do worse. I personally think country is the worst. As much as I dislike rap/hip-hop, once or twice a year there's a song so ridiculous you can't help but be amused. I would guess most people would find a retarded song they would still like.

Some of the greatest music ever written have been operas... Der Ring des Nibelungen; Don Giovanni... etc. That being said it's not one of my top forms of classical music... I prefer symphonies and Concertos and Trios, etc. But yeah there's alot of great operas that have been written... some bad ones too.
