Movies

It wasn't that good of a movie, but he did do good things for AIDS victims in Texas no?

Not really. That's what I found reprehensible about the movie's premise. It was marketed as a hero-to-the-people movie but really dude was just cashing in on other people's misfortune and undermining early attempts at randomized controlled trials. AZT, to this day, is a mainstay of HIV treatment.

I can't remember too much of it, but I don't really remember it being like oh em gee McConaughey is the best person ever. He was bad and good but helped overall the AIDS treatment thing in Tex(j)as. Oh well, not going to ever rewatch it probably.

Philomena is really good

Don Jon: this starts out ok enough. The main character and his family are amusing. The main idea - that he finds porn more satisfying than actual sex with real people (he has no shortage of experience there) - is something most if not all dudes have considered at some point. But then it starts to quickly fade. Scarlett Johansson - the worlds most overrated actress - literally struts onto the scene and stares, blank faced and open mouthed like she always does at her fellow actors. And when Jon hooks up with Julianne Moores character in the back of her Jeep, the flick totally crashes into the mountain. Don't bother watching this....or at least past the first 15 minutes, afterwards nothing funny happens.

Whiteout: actual lol. Not sure why I rented this but it showed up in my mailbox yesterday so I dusted off the ol BD player and obligingly pressed play. The first ten minutes is actually kinda cool although completely ridiculous. But then Kate Beckinsale comes on screen and in exactly one minute is stripping to take a shower. I actually laughed aloud at this. I've never been a big fan of the diminutive Brit and I'm still not sure what the appeal is - there are hotter chicks at my local Y.
I tried to watch another 15 minutes but eventually had to turn it off. It's just ridiculously bad.

Scoop: mildly amusing Woody Allen fare. Basic stuff here. Scarlett Johansson stares, slack-jawed, at Woody and Hugh Jackman throughout the whole movie but still manages to eke out a couple laughs from me. Watch it if you're bored and can't find anything else on Netflix.

 x3

Before you cancel, please note that I will totally pay your Netflix bill if you promise to keep writing reviews.

I watched Akira for the second time the other day. Whatever negative thoughts I had the first time were gone. Brilliant god damn movie.

The Descendents was fun. Could have really sucked, but ended up in the right place. I hope that dorian reviews this one some day, he might make it 20 minutes in.

I watched Footprints a week or so ago and fucking loved it. Everyone else on RC would loathe it, because you gays don't enjoy the gay shit that I do.

It's a Clooney film that got a lot of hype like 2 years ago about a white guy who owns Hawaiian land and debates selling it to other white people(I think)

It's not a Clooney film, it's an Alexander Payne film. This thread is like cancer for the serious filmgoer.

I changed my mind on Footprints. Agalloch might enjoy that one as well, or he'd completely hate it, but for completely different reasons than the rest of y'all.

Maleficent was fun. Pretty things to look at mostly. :)

Days of Future Past was the best X-Men since X2. :kickass:

I have now watched it twice, and must say that Dracula from 1931 nearly unwatchable (other than the stellar incarnation of Renfield). I hate to sound like one of those "ew, old movies are totally lame" type of teenage girls, but other than first 20 minutes, holy crap that is one fucking dull film. Nosferatu from 1922 is one of my all time favoUrite movies, and gets better with each viewing. I also quite enjoy Christopher Lee's first foray as the Count from 1958. And the Frank Langella version from 1979 might be the best of the modern tales methinks, other than watching the Francis Ford Coppola take with the sound off and Solefald playing in the background instead. Hell, I love all the shitty versions of Dracula out there as well! But god dammit, I just can't get into the Bela Lugosi "classic" chunk o' celluloid.

Original Dracula isn't bad but gets better on repeat viewings. The Frankenstein films from the 30's are way better though.

Nosferatu is one of the best original gangster films.
 Very true.

I'll probably watch it 5 or 10 more times eventually. I haven't watched many of the Universal Frankenstein movies since I was a kid, but I'm due to explore those soon I would suppose.
