Never gave myself a proper introduction/misanthropic rant thread

Kevin, you can't say that because you have epic sexy long hair, and after having it for a while, I can guess as much that your deep appreciation for it loses its touch, but imagine tomorrow morning you just wake up bald, and I mean coneheads bald and no eyebrow hair either. I'd bet some serious dough that you'd shitstain your pants, or at least have a shit fit for a good minute or two...

Jeff - Back in high school, the only electric guitar that got donated to the school's music program was a yamaha strat knockoff, and it was in immaculate condition when we got it, and everyone was excited as shit to give it a whirl. Not even two weeks pass by, and the stock neck pickup on it went haywire, and the bridge was warped out of fucking wack and it didn't even have a wammy bar on it. I know the music kids around, and everyone's always careful as shit around the instruments, especially when a new one comes around. It's not a matter of more money means better guitar, its a matter of Yamaha specifically becoming one of those "no-name/president's choice" supercompanies which decides that it's profitable to manufacture anything and everything at a shitty quality, but people will still buy it because its relatively cheap. Let's say it costs about $150 new. You could get a used Ibanez RG270 on ebay for around that much, and suffer from a lot less frustration than this piece o crap.

Var - Just fuck off and die already, I've had enough of your haircut philosophies around this thread. If you can't get a job without having getting a haircut around your place, that says a lot about your talents and academic reputation, methinks... Also, no one likes a hypocrite who tells one person with long hair to cut theirs off whilst complementing another's long due.

Well, you have to examine what you want to do in life. Do you want to become a stock broker or a grocery stocker?

Looking neat, presentable, and professional in the professional world is a given. You are being judged, whether you like it or not. Artistic-type jobs are usually quite lenient and are the exception to the rule. That said, there are other exceptions, such as government contract work. If you're really really good at your job and are a one of a kind in your field, you can pretty much do what you want to do.

But you have to ask yourself if you are a one of a kind in your field of study. Are you so good that you don't have to make a lasting impression on your superiors? At the age of 18, that would be an emphatic NO. No offense, but you don't know dick about anything in the world at 18.

Being clean cut shows people in the professional world that you at least have the small sense of responsibility to know that you want to make a good impression, and that your ideals come second to your work ethic.

Italy is somewhat of an exception because this country is entirely founded upon artistic expression. Just look at the ridiculous clothes, hairstyles, and facial grooming they keep. However, Italy is far from other countries in terms of production and multi-billion dollar industries. I think there's ONE here, and that's Fiat.

Do you want to become rich and successful in your professional career? You can start by getting a haircut. Your artistic career is another thing altogether.

My career allows you to do what you will as long as it doesn't impede your ability to work. I like the State of California sometimes.

HEY!! You're not on a first name basis with any of us yet!

as the construction industry is complete shit in this region of the USA right now, appearances really are very important. I had to shave my goatee and put on slacks instead of jeans and a collared polo tshirt instead of a muscle t or plain white t for the job I have now. It was worth it though, I fucking HATE unemployment. Sitting on my ass for more than one week gives me zero satisfaction. I feel absolutely useless and I turn into a major alcoholic asshole.

So in short, appearances did matter to me. But I'm growing my goatee back and so far no one has said anything.

I get to have long hair in a position as TA at my university. I'm the exception, unfortunately and I know very few guys who go out to get 'real' jobs with long hair. I can get out of any such requirements because of the poorly-worded protections for religious customs around here (worshipping myself *is* a religion, and anyone who says otherwise is an intolerant pig!), but if it weren't for being the exception to the rule in just about everything else I do I'm not certain I'd have nearly as much slack as I have.

In any case, I fail completely to see how the 'haircut philosophy' that long hair is universally superior without question is any better than the current system. Caring about hair that much is just silly, period - there are far bigger issues to worry about, and if that much of yourself revolves around hair it's probably time for some serious evaluation. I don't have long hair because I want to make a statement or stand out, I have long hair because I simply don't like haircuts.

If I'm reading you correctly, I agree that hair shouldn't be considered so important. Hair shouldn't override qualifications - but that holds in any field, whether it's field-testing toothbrushes, teaching mathematics, or making music.

The lashes keep particles out of your eyes, and the brows keep sweat from pouring into them. Yes, some hair has use.

They're strands of proteins (primarily keratin, I believe it's called) that 'die' as they grow out. When the hair (which starts life as old cells smooshed together in the follicles) is growing, it receives less nourishment and is eventually keratinized...

... at least that should be the basic idea, I'm not into that whole 'reality' thing so I don't remember the details well.
