I still have to track the lead vocals and guitar solo, as well as some additional keys and things, but here's a rundown:

Guitars are quad-tracked, Peavey 6505+ (aka 5150 II) into THD HotPlate into interface. 2 tracks are using my Mesa 4x12 impulse, 2 tracks are using kaomao's Marshall 1960a (forget which wav specifically at the moment.) I'm using Andy's favorite, the Maxon OD 820 in front, and EMG 85 bridge pickup in an ESP LTD MH 400 NT axe.

Let me know what you guys think, this is a rough mix just to demo the tone.

UPDATE (7-25-06)
I've posted the final mix (with vocals.) Get it here:

Sounds like the real deal. Very nice tone!!!!

Thanks! As I think you said in another thread, it takes a fair amount of EQ to get this stuff sounding "rude" enough. There's kind of a boxy, lifeless, undergained quality to the unaltered impulse tone even though it kind of sounds correct in terms of overall character. Spent a few days working at it to get it where it is now, but I'm really happy with it!

sounds really good....Ive been trying to do this with my 5150 combo....cant really get a good sound (do not have a overdrive in frt though..maybe thats the key)..

What kinda eq setting settings....if you dont mind?

Great sound. What do you think are the criticals frequencies, using this impulse. Which type of post-eq have you used?

The critical frequencies are around 2k. I've found nothing that sounds as amazing as the new UAD-1 Neve 1073 plugin for giving the guitars some nasty midrange bite. I'm running the demo version right now (have 4 days left!) but I'm gonna buy it because I can't live without it now! Other than that, I'm using Andy's C4 setting, some Pultec, and some MetroWerks EQ. Between all of those, I've made the sound sufficiently rude. :headbang:

Oh I hate you. :kickass: I would love to have that plugin. Yes, 2k is where I really have to emphasize to get the boxiness out myself. You hit it on the head....the impulses sound 'correct' without eq, but sitting in the mix is difficult. I've had to EQ like crazy to get stuff to fit with the impulses. I think they sound great when you get it right.

Uh, one thing Kaz-- Is it me or is the snare panned slightly off-center?

Dude, the fact that you can hear that is nuts. You're right though, I like to pan my snare slightly (as in about 2%) to allow room for other center channel material like vocals and lead guitars, and to make the drums more 3d. Also, I'm using a stereo snare sample out of BFD, which I've imported into my Battery kit. I'm still not totally happy with my snare sound, but it's the best I've achieved so far. I think I know how to fix it though (had an idea on my lunch break today...)

I haven't tracked the lead vocals yet (other than some scratches done during the songwriting process.) Mix of growling and melody... I will post the final version as soon as it's done!

i really like the snare...which one is that?

It's the Ayotte, which I've detuned a bit to give it some more low punch. It might be a bit dark actually, I will tweak it further - cool that you like it, I do too!

what was the 5150 setting that you used? hi gain input? etc.

I have the 6505+ so there's only one input. Lead channel on all tracks. Semi-scooped sound, lots of resonance and presence, just enough mids, just enough pre gain.
