New Pro Tools Hardware

What I don't get here is that you still need to buy a core card, just like you need with the current HD line. The core card costs about $3500. You can get a used HD2 system for about $4000-$4500, right? And the release of the new HD Native, the used prices will most likely sink a bit. So, for $500-$1000 cheaper at tops you can get the new system, and it's only practical difference to the old HD line is that it actually LACKS the DSP power of the old HD line. That's just plain retarded, sorry.
I agree with a lot of your points and feel largely the same way, however, if they've eliminated all of the voice allocations shit with this it's actually a big step forward. Anyone who's ever had to reboot their session b/c they ran out of voices knows what I'm talking about.
I don't think a lot of folks understand that the card is a necessary evil of i/o count right now. Apogee does the same thing on their high end native system. I imagine an express card could be in works but the problem with that is that you see those less and less often on laptops. O/C the stupid thing is if the omni is limited to 8 i/o it really brings that whole line of reasoning into question b/c it does become a dongle thing.

That's very true, and I admit it would be a huge step forward, but we still don't know for sure. Let's hope for the best, though :)

I'm still hoping for a mid-level PT Native that maybe lacks the 64 I/O possibility (I will never have use for that much I/O) and Avid HW connectivity options, but would offer something more along the lines of Cubase/Logic/etc. I'd gladly pay $2000 for that, but I'm losing faith.

Me too and I'd even settle for 32 i/o.

I originally said I could do with 2 I/O for my whole life (mixing ITB was all I'd ever need right?). Then I said I'd be fine with 16 I/O for bussing out groups to certain outboard units. Now I'm down to my last 2 I/O, both of which will probably disappear within a few months...

That may well be so, but for me, 24 I/O would be enough for a long, long time. I could easily track a band live and use quite a lot of outboard gear in the mixing stage, bouncing tracks if needed. 32 I/O, well, to be honest, I haven't even seen many pro studios up here that had more. If they're fine with it, so am I.

i recently recorded in a studio that had the alpha link converters.
32 i/o!
I Didn't know what to do with that many I/o.
until i started patching hardware inserts in!

For tracking 16 is usually fine, but if we're talking about mixing in real-time with outboard, you'll start feeling the shortage. All depends on what you're trying to do. Bouncing continuously mid-mix on an album is not something fun.

Anyway........3500€ for this:

Ridicolous. It's only a fuckin' card that let the pc comunicate with the interfaces.....no processing chip or something else..... If we have to pay 3500 for this piece of shit what do we have to pay for a last generation video card? 100k?

It's like doing an express card for notebook and sell it for 3500€, only to connect an avid interface and let you use PT HD on your notebook.....

And here's the official Avid announcement: http://www.avid.com/US/press-room/Avid-Introduces-Pro-Tools-HD-Native

Funny. They say the following: "Broad compatibility—Provides customers the flexibility to use their platform of choice with the highest performance and stability available on a native platform, supporting both Windows 7 and Mac Snow Leopard 10.6 or higher." I guess that's true if your platform of choice isn't a laptop or an iMac.

The reality is you are realistically paying 1000€ for the card and 2500€ for the software. You may well believe that's unfair, but it's still a more realistic breakdown.

I'm displeased with this release but seriously? What about that statement is untrue? It's $3500 less than HD1 and they sell a version of LE for $3500 already ("003 Complete").

I feel like a lot of guys had some expectation that this was going to be $500 with no hardware limitations which was completely and totally unrealistic on multiple levels.

The omni/HDnative combo is too expensive to not have the simultaneous i/o available on an 003 (!?!) but other than that this is pretty much exactly what I expected.
