A: I can't see why people should be delightged with hearing a cover. a cover is just a lame excuse for a new track to fill "bonus material" on special editions and reissues. I do appreciate covers like "The Sound of Silence" done by Nevermore to the extent that is just shares the lyrics with the original, but in fact is a new song.

Q: in the aforementioned case, do you think the band should change the title of the track and thank the orginal band for "supplying" the lyrics?

A: don't know about "should", but they can't. as long as the words in the lyrics follow the same rhythm/structure as the original, that's a cover song and using a whole bunch of text with another name on would require plenty of authorizations on the part of the original owner (suppose nevermore hit it big and people associate those lyrics with the band... that's a large sum of money definitely not going the appropriate way), which, being in the case in point simon & garfunkel, i daresay is not exactly the most approachable, down-to-earth subject on this earth.

Q: how about explicit rip-offs of someone else's music? think the offspring's "why don't you get a job?", which shares more than a passing resemblance to the beatles' "obladì obladà" (sp). is that a reverential quote? a hoax? coincidence?

A: I think in some cases the band doesn't even notice the heavy influence... maybe they listened to the song when they were kids, then forgot all about it, and then they "came up with the melodies" when they actually just remembered them/digged them out of their subconscious. I don't think it's BAD though... they are recycled and more adapted to the modern audiences... in literature it used to be incredibly common, take for example the story of Faust, just a "myth" or typical story retold by diffrerent people and contextualized.

Q: Can you think of another example of what Rahvin says?

I was watching a basketball match earlier today and my friend is the announcer/DJ there. He played some song that started with an exactly similar synth riff as Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise, only the sound was somewhat different. The chorus had that similar synth thing that goes *puts hands down on keyboard, raises them, puts them down again and repeats over and over*. You know. Then I heard the first 5 seconds of Gangsta's Paradise later on during the match. Wonders of pop.
I recall some Dream Theater song having an exact same part as Metallica's Dyers Eve, but then that could either be a coincidence (seeing as Portnoy (and Petrucci?) is influenced by Metallica) or one of those prog metal things.
The main riff of Nother's Dead is 1:1 with In Flames' Bullet Ride as well. Awesome song though.

The most irritating and nerve-wrecking rip-off is Symphorce's Andy B. Frank's (the name, the irony) lyrics, seeing as he stole about half of them straight from Pain Of Salvation. Kind of hard to try to explain that you just miraculously remembered them and didn't realize what you had done seeing as you even kept the quotation marks, asshole. Grr.
No "funny" jokes about PoS' lyrics either, rahvin. :p

Which country do you think has the most enthusiastic metal fans?

A: Yes.

Q: Do you wear corrective glasses or contact lenses?

a: nope.

q: what separates turning your back on something or someone that doesn't deliver and betrayal?

A: Turning back = upset at the other person's failure. Doesn't deliver = failed to do a task. Betrayal = Selfishness on one's part.

Q: What's your favorite Dark Tranquillity song at the moment?

A: Lost to Apathy

Q: What do you feel like drinking right now?

A: a few things, Playing my acoustic and singing to myself, or listening to something mellow like Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, or Opeth- Damnation.

Q: What do you do for stress relief?
or: what would you like to do for stress relief (if you dont usually do anything)?

A: I did yoga in mexico, that reaaaally helps. I'll do that again when I go back. Hot bath with nice music and lots of candles also helps.

Q: and you?

A: Sleep!

Q: You?
