so I had to turn down a fucking awesome job today
I work on campus for an organization called the learning alliance. campus rules state you can only work 20 hours a week as a graduate assistant (what I am), a student assistant or a teaching assistant. I interviewed for a Faculty in Residence English tutor job for the off campus dorms, the Residential Learning Community. Instead of paying me, the compensation was room and board: a really sweet one bedroom apartment in the dorm.
Learning Alliance is my paying job, and even though the RLC is off campus, the 20 hour limit still applied. I asked the English department chair if she would sign off on this being an internship. My boss at the learning alliance was working with the associate dean of the college of liberal arts to see if they could swing it so I could work my 20 hours at the learning alliance and 10 hours at the RLC. My boss emails me two days ago and says everything is looking great
Then she calls me yesterday, and said everything fell through. Had something to do with room and board are considered taxable income by federal law. So the deal was either 10 hours at the RLC and 10 hours at the Learning Alliance (which would cut my income exactly in half but would give me a place to live) or just do the 20 hours at the Learning Alliance.
So I stuck with my 20 hours at the Learning Alliance. 10 hours would leave them strapped and have to hire a 4th GA. I will have 4 classes I will be helping teach in the Fall and be apart of some really cool new things with the college of liberal arts. but still it sucks I could've gotten a free place to live with free food
TL;DR I could've gotten a free apartment and board with a new job, but my income would've been cut in half which would prevent me from being able to pay bills and tuition.
