This series was a very "true to life" look at the Los Angeles Police Department (L.A.P.D.) of the 1950's! The first episode of Dragnet aired on December 16, 1951 and the last one aired on August 15, 1959. The star of this tv show (Jack Webb) strongly emphasized his desire to make Dragnet as realistic as possible. The tv show was based on the 1949 radio program also called Dragnet. There were later television series called Dragnet '67, '68, etc. but this was the original tv show.
