Opeth growl/sing in English...

I was thinking today, while listening to Blackwater Park, that Opeth are from Sweden, however all the songs I have heard from Opeth are in English.
Have they released any songs sung in Swedish, or any other tongue/dialect?

Do the majority of Scandinavia speak English?

No...thankfully

Mike has sung on a track called Mordet i Grottan, which was all in Swedish. Sounded quite nice, actually.

Opeth, as a band, have never released anything with non-English singing to my knowledge. I think it's compulsory in most Scandinavian countries to take English as a second language, so I'd say a fair amount of the population know it.

Sörskogen is sung in swedish. (one song only, search and you will find)

The majority of Scandinavia has English as a second language to their main language. In Sweden we learn English from 3 grade or something nowadays.

look at it this way - they are more likely to gain popularity and fans if they sing in English, i know it shouldn't really matter but lets face it a lot of us probably wouldn't have been as eager to pick up one of their albums if we had heard they sung in Sweedish
People like to know the meaning behind songs

Another reason is that English is probably the most widely spoken language so a larger majority of people will understand the words than if they were in Sweedish

Makes you think about Black Metal bands who denounce modern society and the music businiess but then sing in English instead of their native tongue....

Now theres food for thought

lol, so would i but it would probably scare away most of their new fans :p

And they would loose their Metal Hammer cover spot, which i must say is the gayest magazine ever - they refered to Opeth's pre BWP albums as "stuck in a rut"

But yeah that would totally kick ass, i hope they bring back more growls...i miss them *cries*

It's a lot easier to gain success when singing in English.

True, here in Finland we have the same thing. English from third grade on.

Btw, Finland isn't actually part of Scandinavia. Instead, we belong to Fennoscandia, which covers Scandinavia + Finland :)

To the best of my knowledge, Opeth has never as a band released any material in Swedish, probably because of the language barrier. But I think it would be cool if they did :headbang:

Hopefully that link still works, haven't tried it. It's Mike on guitar and vocals, with Dan Swano on bass, drums, and keys. great song - the chorus may sound familiar. :)

you call it familiar...I call it cut and paste...
to bad there aren't any other sorskogen tracks...any colleboration of Mike with Dan always got awesome results...except steel but that's only because I don't like power.

yeah...i've just given up on Metal Hammer *spits on a copy lying in his room*

They just seem to think of music as fashion...they referred to Porcupine Tree as "unfashionable brit proggies", which i think is ridicuous - music is not about fashion, its about...well...Music!

From now on i'm only reading Terrorizer, at least their writers aren't pubescant wannabe metalers

Err... You won't be seeing me reading that magazine :E What's so unfashionable in Porcupine Tree anyways? Because it isn't pop-rock/pop-punk/pop/hiphop/nu-metal?

The damn band makes great music, that's all that matters.

That makes me mad... that's my favorite Opeth album god dammit!!!!! Too many people hate it and that simply annoys me.

Don't be annoyed...It's a matter of taste really...
My least favorite Opeth album at some point was MAYH and people looked at me with a crooked eye...I couldn't understand what everyone think is so special about it...later I got it and I was hooked.

Plus English is the best language for poetry cause it has so many words :D

^I agree/for sure/f'sho/fo-shizzle/fo-shizzo heha

So many words have multiple meanings, and so many meanings have multiple words. It's crazy.

I'd say the best metal magazine that I've come across is BWBK
