Opeth: The Love / Hate Band

Funnily enough I have been recommended My Arms Your Hearse before...that's earlier, isn't it? I don't have a clue myself :p How does it differ from BP?

Orchid and Morningrise were what I was referring to; the one you mentioned is heavier (with the exception of Deliverance, which isn't exactly their best CD...) and more complex than the others. Dreamlord is pretty much right, they've gone downhill.

Are you guys saying they've gone downhill for "Opeth" standards, or are you saying, for example, that Deliverance or Blackwater Park are poor albums just generally (musically, production etc)? When I saw Opeth live this year, I thought they were brilliant, and the stuff from Deliverance works really well live, especially the title track. Those last few minutes in the song are fantastic.

For me, each Opeth album is in a class of it's own. Sure, I might like Still Life more than My Arms, Your Hearse, but that doesn't make the latter a 'shit' album by any means. I'm not sure how this is so black and white?

When I say they've gone downhill, I mean relatively. Unlike Dreamlord, I enjoy all of their albums (with the exception of Damnation) - but comparatively, Deliverance is shitty compared to their earlier albums.

(By the way, Morningrise is probably my favourite album ever.)

Heavier eh? Sounds promising

As for flogging autographs...I can understand it, but can't understand why you'd go do it anyway, if that makes sense :loco: I mean, I got autographs from a guy from Fony and half of Hell Is For Heroes, and while I ain't proud of it I'm keeping hold of them I'm keeping hold of 'em for the sake of it!

I don't find anything particularly awful about Deliverance, and the title track in particular is exceptional, but it did mark the first occasion that I felt Opeth were content merely to repeat themselves, especially on Wreath and parts of Master's Apprentices (though that track gets much better after the first verses).

PS Jim, this is one of the few boards on UM where you don't run the risk of getting flamed for speaking ill about Opeth. :)

I think I'm the only Opeth fan that likes the Morbid Angel ripoff at the beginning of Master's Apprentice. :)

My first Opeth experience was Morningrise, and I liked the concept of extremely long and varied death metal, but it always bored me. Picked up Blackwater Park sometime later because of the critical acclaim and was floored.

*cough*
The standout track is the title-track. . . . and seeing them perform this live is positively hypnotizing.
So yes. Twice. :D
