Opeth: The Love / Hate Band

BUMP.

I was reading Dark One's review of Morningrise again (great, great review by the way) and I went to those specific segments he picked out as his favourites. Anyway, I found myself listening to the whole of Morningrise again, and it really is a glorious album. Probably one of the best albums of the 90's.

The thing about Opeth is that there is so much to absorb from each album that you tend to forget how classy the material really is. In other words, it's a lot harder to dismiss the band when you actually have the music playing in the background. Or at least, that's the case for me.

As it stands, Morningrise just became my favourite Opeth album (again).

I love Dark One's review, but Morningrise is still just plain boring to me, and I've given it many many chances. My first experience with the band too, usually the first album I hear of a group tends to be my favorite.

My first experience with Opeth was MAYH. At first I hated it. In fact, I sold it. Then a month or so later, I bought it again, and liked it enough for me to check out the earlier stuff. I still dig the first two the most, especially Orchid. I don't listen to them at all anymore, but I can recognize a quality album when I see one.

Opeth were nothing but a springboard band for me. I can certainly see the mass appeal, and can respect it, but to me, they are a one trick pony. However, I will always have respect for the band, because they definitely broadened my tastes.

Don't hate anything by Opeth, as they're one of my favorite bands. In order of preference:

Still Life
My Arms, Your Hearse
Morningrise
Blackwater Park
Damnation
Orchid
Deliverance

Zod

I'm shocked and not shocked that this topic is still being discussed. LOL.

Orchid is teh shit. MAYH fucking rawks too. Blackwater I still like, Deliverance is fairly ass-kicking, Damnation is not my bag baby, and Still Life & Morningrise I'm not qualified to speak on. I don't think.

WHAT?!?! *faints*

I command you to go listen to this 50 times in a row in a quiet room right now!! And if you don't love it after that then you must listen to it 5 times a day for the next two months until you do. By then, even if you don't like it as much as the others, you should at least be brainwashed enough to believe that you do. Heh.

Ohhhhh alright, just give it more spins when you get a chance.:D

NAD reminded me about this thread and when I went back to look at my ranking of Opeth's albums, it didn't seem right. One reason for this is probably that I've been listening to Still Life obsessively lately and it seems so low on the list. I think I've come to the conclusion that whatever Opeth album I'm listening to at the moment, is my favorite Opeth album. Probably excluding Damnation as it doesn't feel like a full Opeth album to me, but does anyone else feel that way about their albums or as this thread suggests are there large differences between your favorite and least favorite of them all?

i dont understanfd how some people can dislike opeth
Remove your Opeth fanboy goggles and listen to BWP or Deliverance, and you shall see.

(troll post)

MAYH is better than the first two, but still pretty weak for me. Weak as in okay to good, but not great. Not weak as in "sucks ass."

Amen Corner, yes.
Demon of the Fall, no (I know, blasphemy :D ).

whattaya know... maybe people actually *like* it (gasp!)
I refuse to believe that, because to believe that would mean humanity truly has no hope.

(as if we had any in the first place)
