Opeth-Watershed

You couldn't be more wrong.
How? I was at the Opeth forum for quite some time. The people who liked Still Life almost never liked actual death or black metal. They all listened to prog, and Opeth was one of a handful of metal bands they liked. Most of the people who are on the Opeth board do not primarily listen to metal. Those who do regularly listen to extreme metal list MAYH, BWP or Morningrise as their favorites.

Actually most of the people on the Opeth board are 12 yr olds where Opeth is their first metal band, afte having listened to hardcore and emo garbage. Good on them for branching out, but yes, they do tend to go for less brutal music.

As for the prog-heads on that board, there's very few real ones. The majority are ones who have some idea about intelligent music and decide to throw around the word prog as Paris Hilton does the word "like".

Yeah, that's one thing that really struck me about the album. Those growls are fucking incredible. Too bad there's only like 30 seconds of them on the whole fucking album.

Indeed. Halfway through Hessian Peel is pant-wetting :kickass:

orchid is terribly written, and morningrise is basically a gayer orchid. still life is flowery and pretentious as fuck, so many of those riffs are mind-bogglingly shit

if you are listening to opeth to hear compositional brilliance, you are bound for disappointment.

the guitar tone, epic vast feel of orchid and morningrise are why they eclipse all of the other albums by miles. bwp, mayh, still life run in a distant 3rd,4th and 5th. damnation is interesting and relaxed, which i like, but is essentially incomparable with the rest.

the remainder of their discography is redundant.

i know what you mean, ex-opeth fanboy here, but i don't get any feeling from those albums anymore at all, they're too awkward and jarring. a lot of the individual passages are horrible anyway, forest of october for example is such a horrible 'song' by any standards i might apply

On the minus side of this album i think that they´ve maybe jammed a bit too much different parts in the songs,it gets a bit unfocused at times i think.
On the plus side,i really like how they have increased the use of mellotrons on this album, really adds an extra dimension. Another plus is Mikaels clean singing which is his best to date,he´s gotten really good. I also like how they have included "uppy" parts here and there, like in Burden and the beginning of Hessian Peel. As a whole i think it´s a really strong album,i´d rank it 4:th in their discography, anyone who says they´re stuck in a certain sound is way out of his head in my opinion.

Hessian Peel and Hex Omega are the only two tracks on that album that suck. The other 5 are solid

No. Hessian Peel is by far the best track on the album and has the best section on the entire album around 4:15.

Best tracks.

Hessian Peel
Burden

porcelain heart is so basic, the only reason i listen to it is to hear that drum fill, the vocals are really boring

burden is probably the best song on the album, next is heir apperant, that song is so brutal, then the lotus eater is good too. the rest of the album isnt too great, coil is a good intro/filler or whatever ya wanna call it, i dont like the girls voice
