OK. So i am trying to get a friend more into Opeth. He is stuck listening to things like Metallica and Velvet Revolver. He's listened a little bit to Opeth but the death vocals drive him away. So i started thinking what if i could make him a mix cd that sounded like Master of Puppets. HA! Nothing was working. So i started thinking wouldnt it be fun to try and mold Opeth songs to fit into the Metallica mold of Master of Puppets. The quick opening song, the longer title track song, then a heavier song, then the ballad...etc. Ride the Lightning fit the same general layout that Master did.
See if you guys can come up with some Opeth songs to fit this:

Battery (5:10)
Master of Puppets (8:38)
The Thing That Should Not Be (6:32)
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) (6:28)
Disposable Heroes (8:14)
Leper Messiah (5:38)
Orion [Instrumental] (8:12)
Damage, Inc. (5:08)

April Ethereal - One of Opeth's faster songs
The Leper Affinity - Somewhat similar to MoP structurally
Bleak - A slower Opeth song
Face of Melinda - A ballad type
Deliverance - Long song with lots of heavy stuff, solos
Advent - Just because everyone should hear Advent
The Drapery Falls - An epic type song with varying heavyness.
Demon of the Fall - Shorter heavy song

Its very difficult to make someone appreciate music when they cannot tolerate growls/harsh vocals,id suggest you'd have to start of with the more softer like damnation album,to bid you farewell, face of melinda etc and hopefully if he/she will start appreciating the band after that he might look into it,its improtant first he appreciates the band rather than getting turned off straight away by growls, maybe then you can give him/her the more bigger progressive songs, there's no shortage of that.

Not following your pattern really, but:

The Leper Affinity
Ghost of Perdition
Deliverance (or Bleak)
A Fair Judgement
The Moor (or When)
Face of Melinda
The Night and the Silent Water
Demon of the Fall (or Blackwater Park)

Yup

dumbest idea ever

just burn him a "best of Opeth" cd.

because not many Opeth songs resemble metallica in the slightest bit.

If he goes ape shit for Orion then I think alot of Orchid and Morningrise thrown together with some Still Life. But it is REALLY hard for someone to go for death and growling vocals...the way I was able to make the switch a little easier is Cannibal Corpse doing No Remorse. That for me made the switch the a lot easier. But I also liked long songs too so that was easier for me. I switched a real hardass about Opeth he absolutely hated them....but now hes at every fucking show has all there cds. Now he hates Metallica and Orchid is his favorite album. It is possible to convert him

start him off with mostly clean vocal songs...

A Fair Judgement
Harlequin Forest
Drapery Falls
Demon of the Fall (for the ending)

i dunno, they're pretty different styles. i kinda went this way:

metallica -> megadeth -> ...few years of thinking metal has become terrible and boring -> in flames -> dark tranquillity -> opeth

not MoP style but these tracks would be good to start:

The Funeral Portrait
Ghost of Perdition
In My Time of Need
Masters Apprentices
When
Karma
Baying of the Hounds
Bleak

Deliverance is about as close as you're gonna get:

Wreath: Insane opener, anything but quick, but still
Deliverance: The longer title track
A Fair Judgement: The ballad
For Absent Friends: The interlude
Master's Apprentices: Heaviness comes back with a vengeance
By the Pain I See in Others: The off the wall closing track

April Etherial
Black Rose Immortal
When
Face Of Melinda
The Drapery Falls
Demon of the Fall
Epilogue
The Twilight is my robe

??????????????????????????????????
