In my opinion is Still Life. There are just layers and layers of sound happening all over the place and you can really tell that it was a golden-era of song-writing for Mikael.

What do you think?

PS: By 'technical' I DO mean hardest to play, to transcribe etc. etc.

Still Life was definitely their their hardest to transcribe...It's got some wild riffing, and layers upon layers of it. MAYH had some pretty wild stuff as well, and may be more technical on a playing level, but I'm not really sure. So I'll stick with Still life.

I really hope they go back to that extreme layered sound again, I think their new stripped down approach is one of the reasons i haven't really gotten into BP or D1.

Maybe I´m st00pid but Bwp sounds pretty damn layerd to me :)

That's exactly why I love Still Life so much... Every time you listen to it you can find a new riff or a new part of a song that's just so incredible. It takes many listens to get the full experience.

Same with MAYH. It's amazing how many people claim that 'it's good, but Opeth's worst album' and then one day it clicks. Once it clicks, you can get so much out of it. I must've listened to it hundreds of times, and I still notice new things.

I'm gonna agree with Still Life. But I would also have to say that Blackwater Park has just as much going on, if not more, it is just much more subtle. I think I like the subtleties of BWP more. This is where Smith's influence comes in I think, there is just so much going on, but it may just be one guitar holding out one long note or something, a bit more creative in my opinion.

Thats exactly how i feel man, and thats why still life is my favorite :)

yeah I would have to agree with the Still Life comments. I also think its there most technical out of the Opeth catalogue thus far.

My only complaint would be the drum production particularly the bass drums, but other than that its an exceptional release.

As far as richly textured music is concerned blackwater Park takes the cake with ease over all the others; this is why I love this relaease so much, its just rich, thats the best word to describe the album, but Still life is great too for its complexity not super complex just complex. With my favourite song being Moonlapse Vertigo.
