people who dont know any theory piss me off

Sheesh, it's a tough one isn't it. I know a fair whack of theory but the other guitarist in my band is blind and he doesn't know a scrap. That's why I get him to write all the rhythms and I work out what he's playing and write around it.

If you can read music you can play. You don't always need to know the theory behind it. Example, you are a classical tuba player who will never write a song. Why would you need to know theory?

If you're a serious tuba player, you need to know music theory, even if you aren't writing music. Music theory gives you a better understanding of what you're playing and how to play it. That is why anyone who is a music major, composition, performance or education, has to take music theory, among other things. So, for example, when that tuba player is practicing, he can see the intervals between the notes and know what they sound like before he plays them. He's more efficient, if he's doesn't have to mess around with trying to guess if what he's playing is correct, or what the intervals should sound like. He already knows how it's supposed to sound. Or even knowing the circle of fifths is basic music theory and something all classical musicians should know. You bet your gold plated ferrari that tuba player needs to know theory, it's one of the most important aspects of his musical education!

There are a lot of great guitarists who don't know much about the guitar itself. Mikael Akerfeldt for example. He only knows one or two chords on guitar. He's self taught, but he rules like none other.

To say that unschooled players are in any way shape or form lesser than schooled players is ignorant.
Talent comes in many shapes and forms and to dismiss it on these grounds is one's own loss.

They're totally wasting their maximum potential by stubbornly refusing to learn anything.

As for the vast majority who DOESN'T have this natural talent, the fact that some people do well without theory and shit is not the rule that you do not have to learn it yourself. It's merely a lazy excuse.

I'm not a theory know it all, & I have learned what is for the most part a mid leval knowladge at best.
I do however take the initiative to learn on my own through books, mags, web pages, other ppl, etc...
A basic theory at minimun should be learned and defintly the notes on the fretboard.

I still love some unschooled players who have a good ear and a sharp mind and have focused thier talents on thier music.
