Well yeah, I listen to some folk metal as well, and I'm aware of traditional folk music in different cultures...but I don't understand what a folk singer is, as in like pop music that I hear about via talked about on radio etc.

I think that the problem is that folk can be made in a very contemporary way, but incomprehensible stupidness makes folk musicians reproduce the bloody ol' thing in the same way as medieval people played it. It's just like washing clothes in the river just because it's "always been done this way".

I don't like folk metal, but I'm not against it at all and I think its pretty refreshing to mix folk with other genres. I just don't understand why they still stick with the same decrepit formula...

Yeah, I don't get this either. People describe Bob Dylan as a "folk artist" but when I listen to him I am basically hearing slightly improved pop. Then again, "pop" doesn't really have a fixed definition either.
