I'm too young to have heard metallica when they were first coming out, so that sort of nostalgic factor is lost on me. When i first got into metal, i REALLY adored them though. Played those 4 albums hundreds of times. Know lyrics, riffs blah blah (much like everyone here). These days, besides what i hear on the radio i havent pulled a metallica album out in 2 or 3 years maybe. This type of music has just lost its appeal (always liked slayer better anyway). I never considered myself a metalhead either, so no big deal. Good drinking music, fun to sing/headbang to. Just not what i'm looking for these days.
You mention you would rather hear weiland over Kveldssanger, i agree. (you know me, weiland is my fav album period) But after that what do you have? Where at night..(same band!) and two or three other albums (see Forlatt). Bergtatt is better than pf IMO, but i think they're rather different. Garms vocals alone clean/harsh put it over the top for me. That perfect blend of folk/blackmetal seems to be rare as well. Besides transilvanian hunger, i place Nattens over most bm in that style . Pure hate in the vocals, pure beauty in the riffs. So over the trilogy, ulver took three styles (not going to get into labels) and made some amazing works of ART
in each. Not to mention perdition city, which is also great ( and i can't seem to find anything in that style). Two great bands, it just depends on what you're tastes are at certain times.
I like threads on why you think certain albums are great instead of just A > B anyway. Makes for more interesting discussion
