Question to all the Ulver fans - what are you thinking?

I definitely recognize that some people don't like Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, and Metallica and prefer other METAL bands. But 15 people voting against them with a NON-METAL band like Ulver??? Eeeeiiiwrds.

Do you really think people are voting for NON-METAL Ulver here? When was the last time Metallica released a metal album? (feel free to mention "St. Anger"... no, go ahead)

for the same set of musicians to be responsible
So tell me, how much does Ulver of today have in common with the "Nattens Madrigal" lineup? Only Garm? Oh, alright then, I guess your argument was kinda flawed then!

One final note, it isn't a poll on metal or bands that defined metal as we know it; it's about personal taste. Metal = better is a pretty dodgy train of thought in my mind.

yeah. Theres a lot of non-metal that i prefer to metal. That said, most of my favourites are metal :p

You wouldn't have been surprised at, say Pink Floyd 29 - Dimmu Borgir 1 <-- that's me

Non-metal has nothing to do with it.

Well, yeah. Otherwise you're suggesting that people are basing their votes ONLY on 2 albums (Bergtatt and Nattens)? That's pretty lame, subjectivity aside, so I have to give people the benefit of the doubt and HOPE they're going with more than just 2 albums against a band that basically created 4 masterpieces.

Poorly chosen wording, I admit, but I don't think my argument is flawed. In my mind it's the same creative force. I assume Garm has been responsible for most of the changes in the band's history, being the one that has remained throughout, and as such, I assume he was also a major creative force in the beginning.

Either way the same musical "entity" was responsible for a great many different styles.

Sure I would have. I voted against Pink Floyd just to help removee them from the tournament, but it doesn't mean I don't manlove "The Wall", "Dark Side of the Moon", and "Wish you were here".

I still think your argument is bollocks but w/e. Start a thread whining about Deströyer 666 kicking Black Sabbath's Ice-T guest vocalled ass instead.

I'm too young to have heard metallica when they were first coming out, so that sort of nostalgic factor is lost on me. When i first got into metal, i REALLY adored them though. Played those 4 albums hundreds of times. Know lyrics, riffs blah blah (much like everyone here). These days, besides what i hear on the radio i havent pulled a metallica album out in 2 or 3 years maybe. This type of music has just lost its appeal (always liked slayer better anyway). I never considered myself a metalhead either, so no big deal. Good drinking music, fun to sing/headbang to. Just not what i'm looking for these days.

You mention you would rather hear weiland over Kveldssanger, i agree. (you know me, weiland is my fav album period) But after that what do you have? Where at night..(same band!) and two or three other albums (see Forlatt). Bergtatt is better than pf IMO, but i think they're rather different. Garms vocals alone clean/harsh put it over the top for me. That perfect blend of folk/blackmetal seems to be rare as well. Besides transilvanian hunger, i place Nattens over most bm in that style . Pure hate in the vocals, pure beauty in the riffs. So over the trilogy, ulver took three styles (not going to get into labels) and made some amazing works of ART  in each. Not to mention perdition city, which is also great ( and i can't seem to find anything in that style). Two great bands, it just depends on what you're tastes are at certain times.

I like threads on why you think certain albums are great instead of just A > B anyway. Makes for more interesting discussion :loco:

I'm definitely voting for Ulver on 1. both their phases, as I love Perdition City, Blood Inside, and most of the shit between, especially Quick Fix and the Silence EPs and 2. I've been listening to them frequently in the same time that my Metallica albums have been collecting dust.

yeah... I'm going completely by:

If during the month of march, the only CDs I had were the complete discographies of those 2 bands... which band would I listen to the most.... for me... metallica > Ulver. Simple as that.

I agree -- I think "battle of the bands" doesn't make sense because you can't put any strict context into it. It should be "battle of the albums" IMO, then you can be more specific.

So then if you vote for, say, "Svidd Neger" over "Phoenix Rising" then everyone will understand where you're coming from. [insert joke here]

Maybe we should do this again, the problem is that last time we did it I included pretty much every metal album ever made, so it would be kinda redundant to pull the same shit again
