Review the last movie you saw thread

keeping with the Jack Black theme of this forum, watched Kung Fu Panda tonight.

thought that it was an OK bit of amusement, filled with the usual American cliches and misunderstanding about Chinese and Asian culture (calling the master Master Sifu, it's like calling a catholic priest Father Padre) and filled with all that Disney-esque "believe in yourself" bullshit.
But, wasn't a bad film overall.

Had some very cute and amusing scenes.

JB stole pretty much every scene he was in and was very vocally sharp in his portrayal of the hapless clumsy Po.

Some nice throw away lines for the side cast were also good -such as Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin, etc) as Mantis' little parts.

so, all in all, a good way to spend an evening and good entertainment to watch with the kids too.

Kenny & Dogs in Space but I havent finished either just yet so that makes the last movie i watched completely, Pathology - entertaining but not great. Pathology was about a group of doctors who kill "bad" people in "creative" (read: hard to prove/get caught for) ways so they can play the game of "guess how he died". It features Alyssa Milano naked so thats a bonus point for some. Also on the list are drug addicted doctors (of course) and a bi chick who likes to inflict a bit of pain on her boyfriend(?) whilst riding him.:err:

Hot Rod
It's a film set in the 80s, which features a kid who's a fledgling stuntman. His stepfather, who he doesn't get along with, is dying, so he has to raise $50,000 to save him. His motivation is not to save his life as such, but to get him back to good health so he can kick his arse. Funny stuff. :)

Great movie !!! "Cool beans ?"...... "Cool Beans"

Ooh I like this idea.

Black Sister's Revenge (1976)

Watched this low budget '70s blaxploitation film by Jamaa Fanaka (who did Penetentiary) two nights ago. Loved it! Quite different to other blaxploitation films like Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, and my favourite one Coffy, which are a bit more action packed with bigger budgets, with a black hero (or anti-hero) out in the white world... This one comes across much more localized in the black community, shot on location in Compton where the director grew up. There wasn't even a single white person in the movie until over 30 minutes into it (when there was a white cop).

The story is about an ugly girl from the south named Emma who goes to live with her cousins in Compton. She goes to a party with them and gets hooked up with a pill-popping junkie, who subsequently gets arrested (following the usual pulling-over for no reason by LA cops of a car with black people in it, and he retaliates and assaults them) and ends up in jail. Emma sets up a bank robbery to get his bail money and get him out, but when she finds out he was just using her anyway she teaches him a lesson.

It's pretty slow and not as fun as most other blaxploitation movies, but the dialogue is fantastic, and the low budget & director's feel for the location gives it a cool sense of realism in comparison to others in the genre. Also, it has it's usual share of black-power preaching in some of the speeches (particularly by the character "Big Daddy", who dresses in traditional African gear) and also some '70s feminist themes as well - like alot of blaxploitation stuff with a female lead had (Coffy, Foxy Brown, Cleopatra Jones). They also make a few references to the gang wars in South LA (such as Big Daddy questioning why blacks are shooting blacks over turf that they don't even own anyway as the white man owns it), which is very early really in LA's gang history as the Crips & Bloods only formed in the early to mid 70s and it wasn't really brought to attention outside of their own backyard until later, as well as dealing with the whole police-harrassment against blacks in LA issue.

Overall, I loved it but it wouldn't be for everyone and I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point for getting into the genre. Next up I'll be watching Jamaa Fanaka's first film from one year earlier, also shot on location in Compton & Watts, called Soul Vengeance which is apparently about a black man who went to prison, had experiments done on him which made his genitals oversized & superpowered, and when he gets out he seeks revenge using his superpowered wang as his weapon! Sounds like a riot haha!

Gone Baby Gone....

Great film and interesting ending.
It's one of those movies that you will watch and then talk about it for an hour with whoever watched it with you.....
Top cast, top acting...... A must watch and probably in the top 3 that I have seen in 2008.

Casey Affleck plays a PI who is hired to find a missing little girl..... and some other shit happens too....

"Coffy" from 1973, that's my favourite of the blaxploitation films I've seen. Pam Grier plays Coffy, a woman whose sister died of a drug overdose so she takes to the streets armed with her seductive ways, a big afro & a sawn-off shotgun to get revenge on the dealers who supplied her - led by a pimp named King George who is a CHAMP! Best outfit ever & a great "King George" theme song when he is on screen!

I still haven't seen The Mack yet though - really need to see that!!

Actually watched a doco on blaxploitation films the other night too called Baadassss Cinema with interviews with some of the key players from the era as well as Tarantino because he's a huge fan of it all (as Jackie Brown demonstrates!).

I do love genre films... Especially how in the 70s if something took off there would be a couple of years of non stop clones of them, particularly under the 'exploitation' umbrella (and mostly out of Italy!) - creating all these cool little specific subgenres like nunsploitation, the Italian cannibal film, women in prison, nazisploitation (an even more specific subgenre of women in prison films), blaxploitation, giallo, spaghetti western, sexploitation, rape-revenge, Euro lesbian vampire films, mondo films, Italian zombie films, amazon/jungle women films... Love them all!!!

Why haven't I seen this? Part of my brain must have gone missing.
I've not seen it either.

Hellboy: golden army - pretty cool, some good laughts a little long though. Remided me of Star Wars on many occasions. More fun then the first movie and great makeup/effects/sets (thanks to Guillermo del Toro) and more action.

Watched a few comedies over the break Hancock and Tropic Thunder were excellent. Don't Mess with the Zohan not so excellent but enjoyable, it peeked when he arrived in America and was looking for work then it just plodded along for a long time buidling up to an inevitable moral message.

Oh yeah The Deaths of Ian Stone on the weekend and it was alright, was hoping for a little more but it was entertaining enough. A little Dark City/Groundhog Day. Interesting enough, a nice twist and a Stan Winston production.

saw this recently too and though it was a little thin in terms of story and character development, it looked visually beyond amazing.

Del Toro has created some incredible effects and creatures and it just makes me want to see him do either a Lovecraft adaptation or another one of his own films where he has free reign in terms of content and story (like Pan's Labirynth).

he is currenly working on the movie version of the Hobbit, so shall see how he goes with that one.

I completely agree! Lovecraft would be amazing.
