and "Serenades" respectively.
Are you kidding me?! Even though I like that album, it's one of their weakest. Speaking of outstanding albums, Alternative 4 should be pointed out instead. It fails to fit into any genre, and certainly stands out as a masterpiece both musically and lyric-wise. (Hails, Duncan Patterson!) Their best work so far imho, even though it comes only second or third for me.

All I'm saying is this: if I had to choose ONE Ulver album, it would be "Bergtatt". :)
If I had to choose ONE Ulver album, it would be "Shout at the Devil".:loco:

Ulver is lame. Well, actually, I shouldn't say they're lame. More accurately, everything I've heard by them is lame, which consists of "Blood Inside" and Bergtatt".:puke:

One hit wonders (examples) = Aeternus, Ulver, Anathema

What I'm saying is that each of those bands have that 'one' album that truly, truly stands out above the rest. Case in point: "..and so the night", "Bergtatt", and "Serenades" respectively.

What the??!?! I agree that "... And So The Night Became" is Aeternus' strongest release, but both "Shadows Of Old" and "Beyond The Wandering Moon" are almost on par with it. As for Ulver; their first three releases are all mandatory. "Bergtatt" is probably my favourite of the bunch, but the other two are truly remarkable too.

i'm such an ulver fanboy i can't even comprehend those who don't own every album they ever did, or at least the major releases. no, every album. even the metamorphosis ep because the liner notes tell their 100% METHULL NO OTHER MUSIC COUNTS fans to fuck off, hahaha.

I liked it when Anathema wrote songs like "Lovelorn Rhapsody", not "Paranoid Android". :loco:
Does a single song on Alternative 4 sound like Paranoid Android? :err: I don't think so. Actually, the psychedelic songs on Alternative 4 don't sound like anything I know. That plus the perfect composition make it a special, unique album. No matter how much I like Serenades, it doesn't stand out in any way. Even less probably than my personal favourites, The Silent Enigma and Pentecost III. (I'm not too fond of the recent Radiohead sound either. :D )

two observations:

1. I like Agalloch and all, but they really aren't OMFG classikkk!!!!

2. I never knew so many in RC liked Enslaved. I guess black metal fans and gay prog fans vote for them, though.

PS - BTWM is the Aeternus album. And post Nattens Ulver is a little light in the loafers, if you know what I mean.

I'm as opposed to "if it isn't metal, it sucks" as much as you are, and can't help but laugh when the later material is dismissed on that grounds, but at the same time I can't reasonably expect someone to love everything they've ever recorded, as nice as some idealistic fanboy delusions can be. :)
