Should I listen to power metal?

Power Metal is OK when you're in the mood some Nightwish songs are good and also Sonata Arctica have some good ones aswell its just the singing gets on my nerves to "Bon Jovi" for my tastes, but Symphony X are good Michael Romeo is a unbelivable guitarist.

Not a fan of Power Metal. I sometimes listen to Nightwish, and listen to a Sonata Arctica song maybe once a year, other than that, no.

I hate Blind Guardian.

Same. I actually bought the Nightwish boxset thingy many years ago but by now I could stand to just have one album really. I also have one Sonata Arctica album. That is the extent of my power metal collection. They're fun to listen to when you're in the mood for something catchy and upbeat.

You only need to listen to The Lord Weird Slough Feg. More heavy metal, but still kicks the hell out of any power metal band.

I too concure. Lord Weird Slough feg is fucking awesome. They are definately rooted in that late 70's early 80's demin/leather NWOBHM shit that rocks.

I love power metal. I know it's cheese but fuck man, I like cheeze. Every one likes cheese every now and then. If you say you like metal and don't like Iced Earth's Pure Evil or Dante's Inferno, then their is something wrong with you. At least check these songs out. Also check out Hammers of Misfortune. They are a side project of the lead guy from Slough Feg. They too carry that old metal sound but on a different style, which is more celtic influenced and in a good way.

Twisted Tower Dire - The Isle of Hydra
FUCKING RULES! It'll be like the 4th power metal I own, and I don't think I need many more. If they all kicked this much ass, maybe I'd like the genre more.

Slough Feg & Hammers are two great recommendations! Every album by both bands is excellent.

Goat Horn - Storming the Gates
80s heavy metal with some doom (in the riffs) and black metal influence (in the vocals). Great shredding solos, fist-pumping, beer-chugging, sing-along choruses and analog recording!

Because I don't really. The closest thing to power metal I actually like is Manowar, and that's more for the novelty factor than anything. I guess I just want to know if I'm really missing anything.
No, power metal is gay

I forgot to mention Falconer, their first 2 albums are fucking amazing.
I also wanted to say thanks for all the inteligent arguments all you anti-power metal posers have posted. They are both enlightening and revealing of your mental prowess and intelect.

There's no reason to force yourself to listen to something that doesn't appeal to you. I like some power metal, but I listen to it very infrequently and in small doses.

Agreed. Conventional metal wisdom (esp. on here) would have it that Black Metal rules ye all - and yet it bores me to fucking tears. Hence, I don't listen to much of it.

As long as you go into it with one bit of knowledge, like with any genre; there's some good power metal out there, and there's some really bad power metal out there.

Edguy is a mandatory band, at least everything through Hellfire Club.
Elvenking's Heathenreel, a must listen.
Grave Digger, The Reaper through Rheingold. MANDATORY.
Manticora, everything.
Slough Feg, everything but Atavism.
Winter's Bane - Heart of a Killer.

Some power metal I have been digging recently.

Brainstorm - Liquid Monster
Angra - Temple of Shadows
Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction
Primal Fear - Seven Seals
Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor

and as mentioned before

Grave Digger is awesome.
